UNUSUAL FRENCH AUTOMATON HOLDING MAROTTE.

1890s era musical automaton with closed mouth French bisque head stamped in back in red “DEPOSE TETE JUMEAU Bte SGDG” with brown paperweight eyes and flat cut neck socket. The costume vaguely reminds one of “Polichinelle” and holds a bisque head marotte in the left hand and in the right hand a pointing stick with fringe and bells. When the mechanism is wound a tune plays, and as he raises the marotte in the left hand the head turns from side to side. Alternately as he raises the right hand with the stick he tilts and drops his head drastically to the left side. SIZE: Figure is 17″ t (43cm), with base is 21″ t (53cm). CONDITION: Costume shows some fading; a few light wig pulls around rim opening and a blemish in front of right ear, factory firing flaw. 1-14339 (2,500-3,500) – Lot 1283
