Watercolor in brown ink on paper with graphite grid, verso in graphite Signed lower right “John” Identified on period, “Exhibition of works label at the Leicester Galleries, Leicester Square, London March 1956, Pictures from Garsington the collection of Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938) No. 49″ Fragmentary label from The Leicester Galleries affixed to frame on verso John is widely considered to be one of Britain’s leading portrait painters, his drawings became known for their fluid interpretation of not only the sitter’s demeanor, but of their idiosyncrasies as well. Lady Ottoline Morrell was an intimate of the artist, as well as a renowned society hostess. Among her circle were included the Bloomsbury set as well as luminaries including W.B.Yeats, Bertrand Russell, D.H.Lawrence and T.S. Eliot. Garsington was her Jacobean mansion in Oxfordshire. Probably cataloged as Eastern European School.
