Oil on panel Housed in a 19th century molded giltwood frame Unsigned, bears a fragment of a paper label with ink inscription affixed to verso possibly listing the passenger names, and inscribed on panel “Royal Academy 1784” NOTE: The original painting that this work is after was the centerpiece of a drawing created in 1784 by Edward Francis Burney depicting the West Wall of the Exhibition Hall of the Royal Academy. The drawing shows the original large scale painting by James Northcoat, titled “Portraits Painted from Life, Representing Capt Englefield with Eleven of his Crew Saving Themselves in the Pinnace, from the Wreck of the Centaur, of 74 Guns, Lost Sept 1782”. Northcote once proclaimed the work “the grandest and most original thing I ever did.” Unfortunately, the location of the original painting is unknown, however, a mezzotint engraving of the work was published in 1796 by Thomas Gaugain. This version is likely an early 19th century copy after the engraving. SIZE: 24-1/2″ x 30″.
