LEEBOLD & APPLETON NOVELTY 1¢ GUM VENDORS.

First machine being a Leebold ball gum vender in restored condition. Paper label on inside of globe appears to be original & gives the directions: 1st penny – 1 ball, 2nd penny – 2 balls, 3rd penny – 3 balls. Certainly a great gimmick of the time to increase sales as well as dentist activity. Iron castings have been nickel plated & have toned down somewhat making it much more presentable. Machine was probably restored 20-30 years ago and has a nice look about it. Most likely marquee casting is of newer vintage. The Appleton model manufactured by Appleton Novelty Co in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, evidently followed in the footsteps or visa versa of the Leebold: 1st penny – 1 ball, 2nd penny – 2 balls, 3rd penny – 3 balls. Great original decals & paper labels within the globe. Glancing at the decals, it’s good to know that by purchasing this gum, you’d have purified breath & white teeth as they only served supreme high-grade delicious gum. Castings are of polished aluminum and overall machine appears to be in original condition excepting marquee. Marquee is cast brass indicating what one would receive for 1¢, 2¢, & 3¢. The brass casting is possibly original as the casting is very fine but it is obvious that the support to the marquee has been altered or adapted at some point. Both are very nice examples and in functional working order. SIZE: Approx 13-1/2″ & 19-1/2″ to top of marquees. PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carol and Jerry Soling. CONDITION: As stated above. 1-14719 (700-900) – Lot 1153
