BEN FOSTER (American, 1852-1926 ) “SUMMER SAILING”.

Oil on canvas Housed in a fine carved wood frame with gilt carved liner having gilt title & artist plaque (some finish loss) Signed lower left “Ben Foster” Two labels on verso, “The Crane Collection, Boston, MA” and “Jim’s Antiques, Lambertville, N.J.” Ben Foster, best known for his Connecticut Tonalist scenes, was born in North Anson, Maine. He first trained at the Art Students League, studying privately with Abbott Thayer, and then traveled on to Paris, with fellow artists Leonard Ochtman and Charles Warren Eaton. His mature painting style, contemplative scenes in a muted palette, also references his time and study in Barbizon. Foster’s paintings can be seen in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Musee d’Orsay. SIZE: 24″ x 30″.
