WILLIAM JAMES GLACKENS (American, 1870-1938) “ROCKPORT, MASS 1936 NO. 3”.

Oil on board Pencil signed and titled on verso Two Adams Davidson Galleries labels affixed to verso, one indicating a title “Bathers at Rockport, 1936” and being exhibited in the “Washington Collects Exhibition February 19-April 7 1981” and illustrated as figure 32 in the catalog. The other label, which appears to be newer indicated title “Beach at Rockport”. Housed in a fine replacement gold gesso decorated frame Accompanying this painting is a signed letter from Ira Glackens dated October 1978 to Anne Denton Blair on his stationary “Dear Annie – This little study of a beach, measuring 12″ x 16″, was painted by father at Rockport, Mass, in 1936. I remember the water as frigid, having visited Pa & Ma for a few days there, & this place was better for painting than bathing! There exists several studies of this place, but feel lucky you do not have to go in that icy water! yours affectionately, Ira Glackens”. Also two receipts from Adams Davidson Gallery dated December 3rd, 1980 and February 12th 1981 REFERENCE: William Glackens and The Eight by Ira Glackens, page 255-256 “W.& E. Sailed for New York on July, 22nd, as planned… they fled to Rockport Massachusetts…and W. produced a few studies of the beach…” SIZE: 11-1/2” x 15-1/4”.
