RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE TRAPPER MODEL WITH 16″ BARREL IN A SADDLE SCABBARD MADE BY W.S. DUNBAR OF ALPINE, TEXAS.

SN 324028B. Cal. 44 WCF. 16″ bbl. Blue finish. Straight grained American walnut stocks. Bbl is orig 16″ length with standard carbine sights and 2-line bbl address in front of bbl band. Cal. mark behind rear sight. Receiver is of stepped type with standard markings on both tangs. Elevator is marked 44 Cal. Dust cover has some light scroll engraving and may be from another gun but condition matches perfectly. Stocks are straight grained American walnut with carbine buttplate. Buttstock is stamped “C.C.G.” on both sides of butt and on left side of wrist. Saddle scabbard has basket weave decoration and a maker’s mark that says “W.S. DUNBAR MAKER ALPINE. TEX” on right side. Accompanied by Winchester Museum letter confirming bbl length and Cal. and showing shipment on January 7, 1890 order no. 7473. PROVENANCE: The Estate of G. W. “Bill” Stewart of Sonora, Texas. CONDITION: Very good for this model. Bbl and magazine tube are an even plum-brown patina overall with some heavy erosion at muzzle. Bbl address is sharp. Cal. mark is sharp. Bore is dark with only traces of rifling. Receiver is an even plum-brown patina overall with high point wear. Side plate lever, hammer, tang and sight screws are replacements. Saddle ring is a replacement. Dust cover is a replacement with a new screw. Loading gate shows some bright blue and may also be a replacement. Hammer and lever are a plum-brown patina. Tang markings are sharp. Stocks are very good, full-sized, and show nice raised grain overall with numerous dents and scratches especially on the comb of buttstock and toe of butt. Buttplate is also an even plum-brown patina overall. Carbine scabbard is good. Hanger loops are broken. Stitching has been repaired with fishing line. Tooling and maker’s mark are sharp. There is a long sight tear on top. A scarce and hard to find model 1873 Trapper carbine in much better than average condition for this model. 49973-487 TEP (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1022
