WALDO PEIRCE (American, 1884-1970) “GABRIELLE IN A CAP”.

Oil on canvas Housed in a giltwood frame inscribed on stretcher “Gabrielle with cap, Paris/W. Peirce 1917/ For Wendell Hadlock, with best wishes” Note: Gabrielle Lavoisier was Waldo Peirce’s lover in Paris during World War I. She was the hostess at his apartment at 77 rue de Lille. Peirce planned on marrying Gabrielle, however she died from influenza in 1917. He memorialized his feelings for her by naming his daughter Anna Gabrielle. Peirce gifted the painting to his friend Wendell Hadlock, the director of the Farnsworth Museum. SIZE: 28″ x 22″. Overall: 31-1/2″ x 25″ CONDITION: Lined, with shrinkage cracks upper left and old restoration along edges with creases to canvas. 50437-1 (4,000-6,000) – Lot 1010
