No "Caveat Emptor" at Julia's!...
by Mark Ford, CEO

As many of you know, Julia's has been growing rapidly for the past several years. Based on annual sales, we are now one of the top ten Antique Auctioneers in North America. When Jim, and his dad Arthur, started this business almost 50 years ago it was built on a foundation of fairness and honesty.

Jim looked at the auction industry with "fresh eyes" and learned from one of the best businesses in Maine: L.L. Bean. Bean's had a warranty unlike any of their competitors. In 1990, Julia's introduced its 45 day guarantee. We don't know of any other auctioneer that offers a guarantee that comes close to ours. Almost all of them are "Caveat Emptor" - Buyer Beware!

Siro R. Toffolon: Designer of Silver Flatware
By Bill Gage, Department Head- James D Julia Inc.
Siro R. Toffolon was born in Meriden, CT. April 5, 1932. Following his graduation from Wilcox Technical School in 1951, he went to work for the International Silver Company in Meriden, Connecticut, where he worked as a designer of silver flatware. He is accredited with many designs over his 30 year career at the Company as an employee until 1967 and then as a consultant.

In the 1970's he branched out and free lanced his design work to create silver flatware patterns for Gorham, Reed and Barton, Stanley Roberts, Ginkgo, and Lunt. He has more than 450 silverware designs to his credit. His most popular pattern that he designed is "Masterpiece" by International Silver Company. Other popular International patterns include Pine Spray, Dubarry, and La Strada. His other design achievements came in designing clocks for Seth Thomas, Krementz Jewelry, and Firearms for the Remington Arms Company.

Connecticut which he filled with fine antiques. As part of his collections was a renowned collection of Early Connecticut silver from the most important makers, comprising both coin silver flatware as well as hollowware. This was in keeping with his love for silver and its design aspects.

Though much of his silver collection has been dispersed to various institutions and collectors, he retained a handful for their design characteristics. His pride and joy in his silver collection was a pair of 9" coin silver tablespoons made by the nation's most prominent silversmith, Paul Revere, the Patriot. This pair, along with many of his antiques, will be included in our February 2016 Antique auction featuring the Estate collection of Siro R. Toffolon.
