3007 ARCADE REO. Classic 1930s car with great design and wonderful presence. A large nickel plated grill with attached headlights, dual mounted spare tires, and a rumble seat are some of the reasons this toy is highly sought after by collectors. Both front and rear bumpers are intact, which is normally susceptible to damage. Arcade label still present on interior of rumble seat. Toy retains its original nickel plated spoked wheels. SIZE: 9" l. PROVENANCE: John F. Gale Collection, Cambridge, MA. CONDITION: Overall very good plus, most noticeable wear to edges of roof. One spare tire appears to have been replaced. 1-12408-13 (1,250-1,750) Click here to view rotating image.

3047 IVES FIRE HOUSE WITH PUMPER. This is the quintessential firehouse from the late 19th or early 20th century. Without a doubt, the Ives company found and copied an existing firehouse and reproduced in miniature this toy. The clockwork mechanism when activated, a bell rings several times sounding the alarm, and suddenly the front doors burst open, and the fire pumper bolts down the inclined ramp of the firehouse, out into the street, and off to the fire. A large japanned cast iron facade with a wooden cabinet trimmed with cast iron window frames encase the two horse cast iron pumper. In completely all original, very fine condition, with working mechanics, this is a unique and highly sought after toy for collectors. Oftentimes toys of this nature could be too large and bulky, but the somewhat compact size make this an easy toy to display on one's shelf. Architecturally and aesthetically pleasing replica of a firehouse of days gone by. SIZE: 8-1/2" w x 12" h x 16-1/2" l. Pumper measures 14" l. CONDITION: Overall very fine all original condition. Remnants of paper label on paper label on roof of firehouse. Aged stress crack to roof, but not offensive or detrimental. 1-12215 (4,000-6,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3062 BUDDY L BUS. Of all the Buddy L toys produced over the years, this is perhaps one of the quintessential great pieces. Although other firms made buses, the Buddy L version stands alone. Great attention to the detailing from the open louvered hood vents to the seating within the dual spare tires, opening doors, dual real wheels, headlights are just a few of the details that make this a most appealing and sought after toy. The construction of this toy including the extra reinforcement on the underside of the roof allowed the child to give this toy and thorough workout and it would still endure heavy punishment in a child's hands. SIZE: 28" l. CONDITION: Overall this toy is in good to very good all original condition with uniform chipping/paint loss. 1-12137 (3,500-5,500) Click here to view rotating image.

3074 IVES CLOCKWORK HIPPODROME. A spectacular clockwork toy from the 19th century and pictured in the 1893 Ives Blakeslee jobber catalog. Perhaps of the handful of examples known to exist today, this is the finest all original example known. This toy has come fresh to the market from a Maine Estate and located just a short distance from James D. Julia Auctions. A most impressive toy due to the subject matter and the size. Probably one of the most finely paint decorated of American tin toys, the horses have an incredible amount of paint trappings about them and the chariot itself has two applied ormolu Roman-style figures on horseback. The lady driving the chariot is 8" tall and is in remarkable, all original condition including her red cotton gown and felt hat. Typical of Ives, they used a stamped brass face mounted to a wooden molded dowel. We believe that this figure as well as the facial molding were only used on this particular toy. The tin chariot is enameled in blue with a yellow band and red pinstriping. Further decorations include a wreathed floral decal; front and center. When the toy is wound and proceeds forward, an ex-centric mechanism gives the effect of the horses running. Large, extremely fancy red cast iron wheels with smaller wheels at back to adjust for steering. Quite possibly the stringing of the horses is original to the toy. It's improbable that a toy of this age and size is in such remarkable condition and one must assume that a child did not play with this toy nor did future generations of children play with this toy. There is speculation that this particular toy was inspired by visiting Barnum Bailey Circus which was close proximity to the Ives factory. At the circus, they had chariots or should I say hippodromes. A hippodrome (Greek: ??????????) was a Greek stadium for horse racing and chariot racing. The name is derived from the Greek words "hippos (?????; "horse") and "dromos" (??????; "course"). The term is used in the French language and some others; hence, some present-day horse racing tracks are also called hippodromes, for example the Central Moscow Hippodrome. SIZE: 14" l. CONDITION: Overall as discussed above, slight oxidation to one of the ormolu figures and some minor paint loss to black horse on his right front leg. It appears that something was resting against the toy on this side. However these minor losses are not offensive or distasteful. Tips of lances on ormolu figures are missing. 1-12531 (20,000-30,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3075 IVES CLOCKWORK PREACHER. A wonderful toy from the latter part of the 1800s featuring a black gentleman preaching to the masses. This exceptional example came from England and as unusual as that sounds many American toys from this era found their way overseas to Europe. The wooden box is polychromed in an orange-red finish with vibrant yellow highlighting and brown accents. Toy is virtually in near mint, unplayed with condition and the clothing which often deteriorates with age is overall in pristine condition showing little signs if any of any fading and/or wear. The black figure has inset black pupiless glass eyes, wire rimmed glasses and a comical look about his face or a comical look about him. When the toy is wound and activated, he would lean forward slamming his right hand on the podium to make his point while turning his head from side to side glancing to the crowd that has gathered. SIZE: Approx. 10" t. CONDITION: In very fine to near mint all original condition, some minor adjustments needed for figure to function properly. Clockwork mechanism is in working order, however lacking one small screw from left foot and wire from mechanism to body which enables figure to turn head. 1-12294 (3,500-5,500) Click here to view rotating image.

3076 WOMEN'S RIGHTS ADVOCATE CLOCKWORK TOY ATTRIBUTED TO AUTOMATIC TOY WORKS. One could say that this is a political toy from the latter part of the 19th century. Toys often reflected the political and social climate of the period. This particular toy features a woman of color "up on the stump" seeking rights for women of the time period. An unusual as well as historical clockwork toy. When mechanism is activated this woman leans forward, slamming her hand on the podium as if to make her point, and then rises up, turning her head to survey those in attendance of her declarations. She, with her gutta percha head and inset beady glass eyes, stands in her original clothing on a natural stained box. This figure was also used on other clockwork toys, such as the clergyman, the preacher, and the stump speaker. Automatic Toy Works tended to polychrome the wooden boxes and, later on, Ives also produced these toys but generally in a natural finish to the walnut boxes. SIZE: 4" w x approx. 10" h x 5" d. CONDITION: Overall very fine original condition, with slight dustiness to clothing. Clockwork mechanism is functional. 1-12562 (4,500-6,500) Click here to view rotating image.

3077 EARLY AMERICAN TIN CLOCKWORK HORSE-DRAWN FIRE PUMPER. Directly out of an old New England estate, this toy is in as found, untouched all original condition. Although the paint is somewhat sparse, the gilt stenciling is largely intact and overall the white horses still retain a significant amount of their original paint. Unfortunately the tin driver has left his seat and is nowhere in sight. Mechanism is intact and in working order, but requires some lubrication. A wonderful and unique form, with some minor paint enhancement, mostly to the boiler area this toy would be a great addition to any clockwork or early American tin collections. SIZE: Approx. 15" l. CONDITION: Overall fair to good. Most likely toy had a stack sitting over tin sleeve on top of boiler. 1-12533 (1,500-2,500) Click here to view rotating image.

3078 CLOCKWORK IVES HORSE HEAD PERAMBULATOR. An extremely fine, all original toy circa last quarter of 19th century. Exceptional original condition including partial cardboard box with label. The boy simulates movement by pulling and pushing the wooden propeller rods giving the illusion that he is propelling the velocipede forward. More than likely this is a latter example as there is no steering mechanism which is normally found in front of the horse head with a wire changing direction of the front wheel. Paper label on rear of toy as well as on box indicates a patent date of 1873. Toy has been with the original family for decades and is in virtually unplayed with untouched condition. Family constructed a wonderful glass case to keep the toy in pristine condition. SIZE: Approx. 8" l. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus with minor soiling to clothing. Unfortunately papier mache head has a vertical crack and separation at the seam. Tin wrap-around by boy has broken solder point on left side. Partial box (lacking bottom as is condition). 1-12512 (7,000-9,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3080 LARGE GEORGE BROWN CLOCKWORK SULKY. An unusual form as well as size, this wonderful toy has great presence. Clockwork motor, similar in nature used in the velocipede and many other toys is contained under the elevated seating area of the jockey. Although this mechanism is visible, it blends in nicely and is not offensive. It is rare to have a sulky toy in this size, normally they are much smaller and more contained. A great deal of original paint remains with only some enhancement to the red on the jockey as well as the band on the horse. Clockwork mechanism tested and in functional condition. SIZE: 14" l. CONDITION: Overall very good, original condition. White face of jockey appears to have touch-up as well. 1-12404 (3,000-4,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3081 FALLOWS LADDER WAGON. Although diminutive in size, this toy has a large presence. Perhaps the four lights hanging off the coiled wires or the coloring or the oversized ladders make this a possibility. American tin toys let the unreasonable or inane or mis-proportioned items to be combined and make a toy and yet everything looks aesthetically correct. This particular toy has an abundance of charm and the toy appears to be in all original, untouched condition. The various colors employed: white, red, blue mesh well together and perhaps if you had a loose American tin fireman standing next to it it would finish the picture. When the toy is pulled about the floor by the child, the rear ex-centric axle strikes an iron ball which in turn strikes the bell. SIZE: Approx. 7-1/2" l. CONDITION: Overall good to very good, all original condition. 1-12402 (3,000-4,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3087 GEORGE BROWN ORION CLOCKWORK LOCOMOTIVE. When first glancing at this locomotive it seems lacking, awkward, strange. The large wheels are in the front with drive rods going to the pistons in the rear. Obviously a real life version of this locomotive must have existed, but to most of us we have never seen or heard of a locomotive like that. A wonderful example of ingenuity by George Brown and how they combined wood with tin and made it work. Even the wood on the yellow boiler front is heavily stenciled and being an early American railroad engine it has the typical huge smokestack. The tin boiler painted in dark blue and the yellow cab, red roof are heavily stenciled and the clockwork mechanism is concealed within the boiler. When wound the toy will propel forward and under the engine cab is a small wheel that will allow the train to proceed in various directions. Overall the condition is good to very good. SIZE: 9-1/2" l. CONDITION: Overall outstanding and all original. There was an aged, somewhat amateur repair/resoldering of engine cab roof to sides with some minor paint loss incurred. 1-12403 (3,000-4,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3089 LIONEL #8 TROLLEY. Many of Lionel's early production pieces on today's standard and in comparison with the Golden Era (1930s) are somewhat primitive and lacking detail yet they are very unique and have an abundance of charm about them. This particular trolley, when one sits down and studies it is very lifelike and if one were to compare the real piece to this toy they would be quite similar. Common saying at the time must have been pay as you enter on all trolleys. Stenciled on the side of this piece is "No. 8 Pay As You Enter". Embossed on the underframe is "Lionel Mfg. Co. NY". Enameled in dark green with yellow clerestory, windows and doors. Electric motorized unit on front truck. This is the largest of Lionel trolleys. SIZE: 19-1/2" l. CONDITION: Overall good to very good condition. Appears to have some paint touch-up on front edge of green roof and one small touch-up spot further back on green roof. 1-12489 (4,000-6,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3091 LARGE SCALE MODEL OF A TROLLEY CAR. An absolutely fantastic large scale (4" track gauge) European style enclosed street trolley car. Undercarriage of heavy gauge steel with an intricate amount of detailing to said undercarriage/framework of this trolley. The body is constructed of wood with a full interior including a multitude of seats, trolley controls, entrance way adornments, glass clerestory and trolley pull. Pull is geared in a fashion that by pulling a string at either end it can be reversed hence when the trolley reaches its final destination it just reverses its course as the conductor walks to the other end. This piece was probably produced by a craftsman with machinist abilities and most likely made in the 1920s or early 30s. Wonderful period paint with some alligatoring to finish. Piece is most unique and a great addition for those who appreciate and understand finely made and detailed railroad memorabilia. SIZE: Approx. 36" l x 14" to rooftop. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus! A few minor repairs needed such as reinstalling some loose glass and clerestory and a minor cleaning to eliminate the years of dust and grime. 1-11773 (2,000-3,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3102 REVISED: 11/26/2012 ~ Additional Information: We’ve been asked if the skittles are the exact original ones that came with this exact container. There is no way we can guarantee this, they are antique and of the correct style and are a spectacular set.

GERMAN INDIAN SKITTLES CONTAINER WITH BRAVES. Without a doubt, of all the various German skittles (AKA 9-pins), this particular example is the most visually stunning and aesthetically appealing. The chief in full headdress with braided hair cascading down either side of his face is bare chested with Indian jewelry and simulated leggings with feather adornments. Perhaps one of the largest of all 9-pins containers (approximately 29" l.) his open cutaway back would contain the various Indian themed pins. Obviously the kingpin was the chief with full headdress cascading down his back. Polychromed in vibrant colors with exceptionally intricate molding to the facial features make this a piece that all who see are sure to comment on. Retaining original paper label on underside marked "Made in Germany" with most likely a six digit product number. Stamped tin wheels allow this toy to function not only as a 9-pins container, but one for a child to pull along the floor. The Indian pins themselves are affixed to wooden platforms, and when set up in a V-formation, the child would roll the ball to knock over as many as he could. Due to the frailty and size of these toys, it's amazing that they have survived and still remain structurally sound and overall in excellent condition. This is one of only a few known examples in existence today. In as-found, untouched condition, a light cleaning would surely bring out the luster of the paint and make this toy even more vibrant. SIZE: 29" l. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus, some paint loss/wear especially noticeable to a couple of the feathers in the headdress. Overall paint is largely intact with no restoration and/or repairs. 1-12473 (15,000-25,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3104 GUNTHERMANN HAND PAINTED GERMAN TIN LADY. Very elegant hand painted German tin toy from the early 20th century featuring a lady in a tin molded blue layered skirt with a black jacket holding a muff in her hands. When the toy is wound up, she realistically moves forward by means of a clockwork mechanism enclosed in her skirt. As she is moving forward, she is jointed at the hips and she sways just a bit from side to side. Toy is in remarkable all original condition including her fur scarf around her neck which normally is missing. An exceptional toy with great presence and seldom found in such wonderful condition. SIZE: Approx. 8" t. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus with minimal wear and/or chipping to the figure. 1-12459 (2,000-3,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3105 BUSTER BROWN & TIGE GERMAN WINDUP TOY. A most unusual form, this toy is somewhat reminiscent of the Lehmann climbing Miller. When the toy is wound and activated, Buster Brown or Tige will climb up the pole and drop and the reverse figure will climb upwards. There were a handful of various Buster Brown Tige toys and perhaps this is one of the most unusual and seldom found examples. Toy appears to be in all original condition with typical paint schemes used for Buster Brown and Tige. Due to the frailty of the toy, it's amazing that any of these would have survived. Its unique form and the subject matter make this a most appealing and desirable piece. SIZE: 13" t. Base is approx. 4" x 4". CONDITION: Overall good to very good condition. Minor solder repair on rear of toy. 1-12458 (1,500-2,500) Click here to view rotating image.

3106 BUSTER BROWN & TIGE WINDUP GERMAN TIN BELL RINGER. Buster Brown and his faithful friend were commonplace fixtures in the earlier part of the 20th century and they advertised shoes, bread, biscuits and many other commercial goods. Many toys were made depicting these two characters and it's always interesting to see the various toy maker creations. Who would ever think Buster Brown and Tige would be standing at a lamp pole ringing a bell?! The ingenuity of the toy manufacturers and their ability to create such whimsical pieces certainly these creations must have had some appeal to the children at that time. A four inch platform with Buster Brown and Tige standing at the pole and when the mechanism is activated the jointed arms on either figure will ring the bell. SIZE: Approx. 8" t. CONDITION: Toy appears to be in untouched, all original condition with vibrant painting and uniform wear. Overall very good condition. 1-12455 (1,500-2,500) Click here to view rotating image.

FABULOUS ROOSTER SKITTLE SET. Extremely large brightly multi-colored papier mache rooster with glass eyes riding on four cast iron wheels painted gold cradling a nine pin set in the form of chicks. Chicks are dressed as clowns; they are nestled in the rooster in the original excelsior. Breathtaking set of skittles. The set looks like it has hardly ever been played with if at all. SIZE: 19-1/2" l x 15-1/2" t. CONDITION: The rooster’s colors are bright and vibrant shows almost no wear. Typically these delicate works of art exhibit considerable damage, however, this example is simply extraordinary. A couple of minor chips on one side and a slight old crack on the left side. The Peeps are dirty but most are in near excellent condition. One would be hard pressed to find a better example. If you need a skittle this is the one. 1-12471 (8,000-10,000) Click here to view rotating image.

3117 GERMAN HAND PAINTED TIN WINDUP CAROUSEL. In fabulous all-original condition, this circa late teens/early 20s toy features four lithographed animals with riders and a chariot with passengers. When the toy is wound and activated, it proceeds in a counterclockwise fashion while the music encased within plays a tune. The tin painted in cream with gold pinstriping, and airbrushed with blue, mauve, green, and orange further enhance the appeal of the toy. This was at a period of time when hand enameling of toys was becoming obsolete and lithographed tin would be the new wave of the future. The coloring and presentation of the animals (elephant, ostrich, dappled horses) would have been hard to duplicate and much more costly if they had been hand painted. Truly a wonderful and fanciful toy that not only appeals to toy collectors, but those who sit, watch, and listen. SIZE: 15" h x 9" dia. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus to near mint with a few paint chips and scattered dings. 1-12467 (1,000-2,000) Click here to view rotating image.

The hull bottom and decking has a copper finish with a black band at top of left and right sides. Live steam motor itself has a copper wash and black smokestack. Boat is a very rare and desirable model. Seldom do such Rock & Graner boats like this come to market. SIZE: 16-1/2" l. 3258 SALESMAN SAMPLE OLIVER PLOW. One of the most recognized names in farm machinery, this classic walk-behind plow consists of a long wooden body with large brass plow, stabilizing wheel and hitch. Hand painted in red and black with "Oliver's Patent" across the top and on both handles and "Oliver's Combination Plow" on either side. While Julia's has sold salesman sample Oliver plows before, what sets this example apart is the fact that it has descended through the very Oliver family that invented it. An article that appeared in "Oliver Heritage" magazine a few years ago talks of George whose mother’s maiden name was Oliver and was a direct descendent. The plow was given to her upon the close of the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 where it had been on display. It has been in the family ever since. In fact, one time many years ago the present consignor was out in the yard using it to work the soil when George came home and quickly snatched it up, saying "That's not a toy!". Hearing the consignor speak fondly about the piece, his father and the experience it a touching tribute. SIZE: 22-1/2" l x 8-1/4" t.
