2164 | THE SARGENT FAMILY MEMORIAL SAMPLER FOR ELIZA. SARGENT, MARCH 12, 1811. Silk on linen, worked by Margaret Sargent (b. 1802), top center panel titled "A Family Record" including names of her parents, dates of their births and marriage, as well as birth dates of her nine siblings. A pious verse stitched above the bottom memorial panel consisting of a monument and urn flanked by weeping willows, a tribute to her sister, Eliza, "Sacred to the / memory of Eliza Sargent / who died March / the 12 1811 aged / 2 years and 2 mon / tho lost to sight in / memory dear we / meet again in hea /ven." Below the monument reads "Executed by Miss Margaret Sargent," with a wide floral border and a cornucopia flanked by grapes above the upper panel. Young Eliza's death is listed in the "Index to Deaths in the Massachusetts Centinel and Columbian Centinel 1784-1840" as the youngest daughter of Loring Sargent. The maker's parents, Loring Sargent (1775-1838) and Margaret Abrams (b. 1779), were married 20 January 1799 by the Rev. Sam Stilman in Boston and had ten children, all of whom are recorded on the sampler. Loring Sargent, whose occupation was that of a bricklayer, is both listed in the 1810 and 1820 United States Census for Boston Ward 3, Suffolk, Massachusetts, as well as the "Boston Directory (for 1800) 1800, Boston" printed by John Russell. The directory lists residence on Prince Street. The sampler is by direct descent through the line of the maker's sister, Susan, who married John Nathaniel Barbour (1805-1890) in 1830; the couple had five children. "The Boston Herald" announced his January 29th, 1890 death in a lengthy article entitled, "A Man of Many Good Deeds: Mr. John Nathaniel Barbour of Cambridge Dead." His address is listed as #34 Prince Street, Boston. A copy of the Sargent Family history accompanies this lot. SIZE: 24"h x 21"w. CONDITION: Very good overall with yet vibrant colors. 2168 | OUTSTANDING HALF PLATE DAGUERREOTYPE OF CHARLES HENRY LEWIS, SEAMAN. The photo with hand tinting and gilt detail, circa 1840's. The daguerreotype with modern seal placed into a black leather case with velvet interior. The image shows a man holding an extended telescope wearing a white overcoat, black vest, white shirt & large hat. His cheeks have been tinted red, all in a studio setting. The photograph was found in a small folder which was titled "Captain Lewis (great grandfather)" and this folder is present with the lot. Also accompanying the lot is the family Bible with a removed Lewis family register. In the back of the bible are photographs of five members. A copy of a family record starting with Eriah Lewis, 1796 and ending with Melissa Ann Lewis, 1833 includes a listing of Charles H. Lewis born September 26, 1819. A letter dated May 28, 1841 from New York by a J.M. Suttor with salutation line "I remain your friend & old shipmate". The letter was written in New York and is to "Charles". This letter talks about whaling, and is an update of things that have happened in the recent past stating "I have told you all the news that I can think of...". A copy of the letter is included in the lot. While the bible contains no direct information about his career as a sailor, the birthplaces of his children give an indication of his whereabouts in the 1840's and suggests that he could have been a sailor in the Great Lakes area. His first and fourth children were born in New Haven, NY on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in 1843 & 1849. The second child was born in Port Colborne, Ontario on the northeast shore of Lake Erie in 1845. The third & fifth children were born in Milwaukee, WI on the western shore of Lake Michigan in 1847 & 1852. In 1860 the census lists him as living in Milwaukee, WI and he was employed as the lighthouse keeper in Port Washington, WI from 1874-1880. In the 1860 census it lists his occupation as "sailor" yet the daguerreotype makes him appear to be a man of considerable experience. CONDITION: The plate is in very good condition. Under raking light a series of fine scratches can be seen on the lower portion of the image. Typical minor tarnishing at periphery, the reverse of the plate is silvered indicating that it was electroplated. The daguerreotype was recently re-sealed and the modern paper tape seals have been tinted to give the appearance of age. The image shows a great deal of detail and the figure stands out nicely with almost a three-dimensional appearance. Included is a conservation report from Paul Messier. 9-20792 (10,000-15,000) |

2193 | THE COMPLETE MID 19TH CENTURY BRASS FOUNDRY OF WILLIAM H. WEBB OF WARREN, MAINE. This extraordinary intact foundry is considered one of a kind and includes three hand written day books from 1853 to 1857. The day books are a daily journal of Webb's activities which revolved around his brass foundry. The foundry is comprised of the majority of items as inventoried in the Estate of William H. Webb, dated February 8th, 1869. It includes two treadle lathes; a fly press; a rolling mill; various leg vices, dye plates, anvil, tongs, punches, drills, and shears; all which are listed in the inventory. Remarkably, it also includes hundreds of items including patterns for andirons, tool, candlesticks, burner parts, rough castings & other castings, etc. There is also a small book which is hand written having children's names & ages and also a day book entry for the year 1828. Work in progress includes buckles for harnesses in all states of completion, burners for whale oil lamps, brass pattern for andiron parts, candlesticks, and harness hardware. The collection includes two pair of signed Webb andirons, a pair of candlesticks, and two whale oil lamps. There are crucibles, a bench, the punch set used to sign his name, and much more. The punch press is presently set up with a die that cuts the tubes for whale oil burners. William Webb started his career in Boston, MA and was the son of Barnabas Webb, a Boston Silversmith and grandson of William Homes, Sr., a Boston Silversmith and nephew of Benjamin Franklin. He worked for three years as an apprentice to Thomas Leach, a Boston brass founder. He completed his six-year apprenticeship under Sam Austin, another Boston brass founder. He left Boston and moved to Warren, Maine in October of 1799. The brass foundry was established at that time and continued until 1856. The 1857 map of Lincoln County shows the Webb brass foundry near the family farm. This may be the only intact brass foundry with detailed inventory and history in the country. This is truly a time capsule of historic significance! NOTE: In 1966 William Buckminster, an antique dealer from Owls Head, Maine, discovered an extraordinary find. In the hay loft of the William H. Webb Estate farm he found the remains of the Webb Foundry which was located nearby in Warren, Maine. Mr. Buckminster gathered and moved everything he could find to his building where, upstairs, he set the foundry as if it were still being used. He continued to gather items of Webb's from neighbors and townspeople. Included in these additions are the finish andirons & candlesticks. REFERENCE: Maine Antique Digest, April 1983, Extensive 4-page article on William Homes Webb, Brassfounder, Warren, Maine by Paul Ackerman. SIZE: All pieces and inventory will fit in a commercial van.
