On reverse of board is pencil title, also “5th April 1892” and “To Sir Samuel Baker”. Sir Samuel Baker was one of the most famous of all British big game hunters of the 19th Century. He was also a British explorer, naturalist, officer, engineer and abolitionist. Born in 1821, he died in 1893 and he is very much the British contemporary of Theodore Roosevelt. Both of these paintings were purportedly sold in 1948 and taken from Sagamore Hill, Cove Neck, Long Island which was where Roosevelt lived. Gilbert Gaul was a renowned illustrator known for his crisp portrayal, particularly of Civil War and Western scenes. He provided illustrations for various publications. One was Scribner’s Magazine which was the publication that covered Teddy Roosevelt’s 1908 African safari. NOTE: Along with the paintings come two photographs of an inscription that was found with the paintings “Sold 1948 Taken from Sagamore Hill, Cove Neck, L.I.” SIZE: 16″ x 11-1/4″. PHILLIP RUSSELL GOODWIN (American, 1882-1935) HUNTERS IN A CABIN USED FOR PETERS 1921 CALENDAR. This wonderful signed oil on canvas by Philip R. Goodwin was originally commissioned in 1920 by Peters Cartridge Co of Cincinnati, OH, one of the largest ammo manufacturers of the period. It is the subject of a famous 1921 Peters Cartridge Co. Calendar. The image is of four men in their period hunting gear, two with double guns, eagerly preparing for a cold weather hunt inside a cozy wooden shack. Image includes a wooden crate of PETERS shotshells, clearly marked, and shows several PETERS 2-piece shotshell boxes. Goodwin’s signature appears in the lower left corner of the image. The Peters Co. was sold to Remington Arms in 1934 as was the original painting. Sometime prior to 1970, it is not known exactly when, Remington sold the painting privately. Once again in 1983, the image would become calendar art as the original was loaned back to Remington Arms’ Richard Baldwin for the production of a retro-look calendar having many of the same attributes as the 1921 Peters version. This painting is illustrated in Larry Len Peterson’s book, “Phillip R. Goodwin: America’s Sporting & Wildlife Artist” on p.239. Philip R. Goodwin (1882-1935)is known for his illustrations of hunting, fishing, and cowboy scenes, especially scenes featuring firearms. By the age of eleven, he had already sold his first illustrations to Collier’s magazine. He was educated at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and the Art Students’ League in New York. He also studied with Howard Pyle in Pennsylvania. His works exhibit much of Pyle’s earnestness and discipline. Goodwin produced many notable pictures, the subject matter always being very convincing and dramatic in color. In his early twenties, he established a studio in New York and met Charles Russell, whose paintings provided a great influence on Goodwin’s work. This is seen not only in Goodwin’s use of bright, vivid colors, but also in the romanticized subject matter. Goodwin’s pictures were published in The Saturday Evening Post, Harper’s Monthly and Weekly, Outing, Scribner’s, and Everybody’s magazines, in addition to calendar subjects for Brown & Bigelow, advertising for Winchester including their famous Horse/Rider logo, Marlin, and Remington/Peters Company. He also illustrated African Game Trails for Theodore Roosevelt and Jack London’s Call of the Wild. This is a unique and rare opportunity to own a sporting classic that has never been offered for sale to the public. UNSIGNED (American, Mid 20th Century) THE NUTCRACKER SUITE. Unframed oil on canvas mounted to plywood holiday festive scene shows a young girl watching a small hand cranked puppet show which has just been opened from a gift box on Christmas day. The interior room shows a Christmas tree laden with gifts and a formal living room with fireplace, mantle accessories and furniture. A pull horse toy is in the foreground and two large swinging French doors flank the scene. The parents look from above. This was used in the holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Years at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts for many years during the last half of the 20th Century. SIZE: 124″ x 90″. Mrs. Nassy left her entire estate including this painting and her apartment at 215 West 75th St. to the Julliard School. Mrs. Nassy’s Executor was Mr. Lawrence Linzer at 531 Main St. NY, NY. HENRI ADOLPHE LAISSEMENT (French, 1854-1921) THE DIVINE READING. Outstanding oil on canvas interior scene shows a Cardinal in his red ecclesiastical robes seated in a large armchair with elbow resting on green draped table concentrating and reading from an open book. Beside him is a table globe and four stacked books. A Persian carpet is seen with a large pillow and portfolio by the table. In the background is a large cabinet with open door showing some books. Signed lower right “H Laissement”. Housed in a magnificent gilt wide frame with double liner which appears to be original. SIZE: 18-1/4″ x 15-1/4″. PROVENANCE: Descended through the Joseph M. Patterson family to Dorothy Patterson. The Patterson family were journalists and publishers, and Joseph was the grandson of publisher Joseph Medill, founder of the Chicago Tribune and a mayor of Chicago, Illinois. ADOLPHE ANTOINE PERROT (French, 1818-1887) CAMPO SANTO AT PISA, ITALY. Outstanding large historical oil on canvas scene of the monumental cemetery at the northern edge of the Cathedral Square in Pisa, Italy. The interior view shows a long hallway with arched cathedral windows on the inside wall and a tall wall of colorful frescos on the interior wall. Below the frescos are sarcophagi along with a collection of Roman and Etruscan sculptures and urns. During WWII a bomb fragment started a fire burning much of the wooden trusses and damaging almost everything inside the cemetery. A long arduous task of recreating the damaged pieces is underway. Signed lower right “Perrot 1881″. An impressive detailed rendering of one of Italy’s great treasures. Housed in an antique gesso decorated frame having an El Artes Habana Cuba framing label. The tall monument centering the painting. Signed lower right. Housed in a fine reproduction gilt gesso decorated frame with wood gilt title & artist plaque by Guido Frames of Boston, MA. Accompanying the painting is a Certificate of Authenticity by Klein Art Gallery of West Hollywood, California. Signed by David Klein indicating the painting is circa 1955. WENCESLAS VACLAV VON BROZIK (Czech Republic/Austrian, 1851-1901) THE PRESENTATION. Outstanding large and important oil on canvas scene depicting an extended eight-person family who are gathered in a lavishly decorated room. A young girl in white dress with an older girl & boy stand in front of their grandparents who are seated with their father standing beside. The young girl is presenting a bouquet of flowers, the boy plays a lute and the older girl has an open page of sheet music. The girl’s mother is seated with feather fan watching the event and another woman in white dress looks over her shoulder. The lavish room setting includes large portraits, large hand painted collector’s cabinet, fancy clock, red carpet and large potted plant. Signed lower right “Brozik”. Housed in a magnificent gesso decorated gilt frame. The artist has executed the figures in great detail along with a realistic, aristocratic interior. Brozik was known for depicting Royalty in his paintings and this very well could be a high level aristocratic family or Royalty. SIZE: 35″ x 48″.
