Provenance: Purchased by Dr. Gustav Langmann for his wife Katherine Zinsser Langmann when they lived in New York City. The painting was purchased for $500 somewhere between 1897 and 1919. It descended from Emily Langmann Vanderderker than to Gene Vanderderker Burgess than to Linda Burgess Eikleberry and Bonnie Burgess. The painting was relined in 1972 by Helmer Erickson Studio in Santa Barbara, California. This painting comes directly from the family to us and is being offered for the first time. A fine work by Richards at a time when he was putting out his finest works. French clock stand, which has an oval modeled green alabaster top, set in an ornate gadrooned ormolu frame on a reticulated apron with reed and column legs. This stand descended through a Maine family, whose ancestor worked as an ambassador in Russia during the late 19th C. According to the family, it was at this time that the stand was acquired. SPECTACULAR VICTORIAN MEISSEN PORCELAIN ORNAMENTAL CLOCK AND STAND. This lavishly decorated two-piece suite features a Victorian porcelain mantel clock encrusted with ornamental flowers, putti and foliage. The clock is accompanied by a conforming, lavishly ornamented Meissen porcelain stand, featuring relief sprays of flowers. The undersides of both clock and stand are marked with the Meissen blue cross sword. The Maine family from which this descended once had an ancestor who was an ambassador to Russia from the United States during the late 19th C. This half-life size figure has outstanding carved features including large wings, ruffled dress, hand and facial features, and gilded torch. She stands atop a gilt ball and plinth. A three-legged round base is an addition for display. Outfitted for light fixture. Figure has a great patina. Descended from the original owner who bought it at the fair. RARE WOOTON-STYLE LADY’S SLANT FRONT DESK. During the 19th century, Wooton was known as the “king of desks” and made what was considered the finest patented secretary in this country. Firms both here and abroad attempted to imitate Wooton’s pattern, and this example is one such copy and is believed to have been produced by Henry H. Wiggers of Cincinnati, Ohio. In the Smithsonian Institute book, “The King of Desks,..”, on page 16 it states that “on 6 February, 1877, Henry H. Wiggers of Cincinnati patented another variety of the Wooton-type desk. The patent specification for this desk or secretary, stipulated that it was provided with a pair of hinge covers, coupled to a sliding member in such a manner that the advancement of said slide causes the covers to open to the right and left respectively, while the retraction of the slide restores them to their normal or closed position.” Also a similar desk to this example is shown in the publication. This very rare example, in the Eastlake Manor made of walnut exterior, features a slanted front with molded panels; each with grooved diagonal boards. The sides, with walnut applied ornamental plates and the base carved with quatrefoil cut outs. When the slant panels are pulled forward as the patent states, the writing surface slides out directly in front of the ‘sitter’. Once opened, the interior consists of a four drawer, pigeon holed interior with both sliding sections of the doors having fitted with six pigeonholes each all decorated with an arched Birdseye façade at the top. A very handsome and ingenious Victorian walnut lady’s desk. SIZE: 33-1/2″ w x 23″ d x 44″ h. CONDITION: Desk is in old, probably original finish and structural in generally good condition. Please note: When the front is opened and the lid slides out, the rear plate to which the extender arms attach was probably originally of walnut and appears to be an old replacement. SPECTACULAR SOLID GOLD AND DIAMOND BRACELET. This fabulous bracelet, set with over 80 cut diamonds is tested solid gold and believed to be possibly 18-karat gold. The diamonds arranged on the front in a buckle type design with a most elaborate and decorative design. The clasp on the reverse, set with a genuine cut diamond. The bracelet opens with hinges on either side on the halfway mark with fine chain guards. The bracelet is stamped with hallmarks, both on the top of the ornamentation and near the clasp. FABULOUS ANTIQUE VICTORIAN WICKER CHILD’S CARRIAGE. This very rare carriage has a wicker seating area with rolled wicker edges. The front of the carriage, mounted with a stuffed hide-covered pony, replete with all the harnesses. When the carriage was pushed, the pony in the front would gallop up and down, obviously for the child’s delight. A fabulous Victorian child’s item and certainly an item that would have brought a great deal of delight to any child. The carriage and wicker painted white and blue. FINE 19TH C. RUSSIAN LACQUERED TEA CADDY. This beautiful box descended through a Maine family, whose ancestor worked as an ambassador in Russia during the late 19th C. According to the family, it was at this time that the box was acquired. The top features a troika pulled by three horses with a gentleman and three lovely maids inside. The landscape is nicely painted with light gold highlights. The top lifts to reveal two brilliant red lacquered compartments with sliding lids, each for tea. The interior of the top lid hallmarked with three bright double-headed imperial Russian eagles with Russian inscription surrounding it. This is an outstanding 19th C. tea caddy. OUTSTANDING ANTIQUE LACQUERED RUSSIAN PHOTO ALBUM. The front scene of this beautiful 19th C. lacquered album depicts a scene of what appears to be a priest blessing a robed warrior. A maid attends the affair with a tray of wine. The interior of the album is filled with photographs, some hand colored, of Russian peasants and large city scenes (probably Moscow). The Maine family from which this descended once had an ancestor who was an ambassador to Russia from the United States during the late 19th C. SUPERB LARGE SIGNED CAPODIMONTE CHARGER. This beautiful charger depicts a scene of Napoleon’s retreat from Russia. A detailed image of Napoleon on horseback followed by some of his generals and masses of troops in the background. Image signed by Rogers, housed in an exquisite gilt, cobalt blue and green border. FINE STERLING AND ENAMELED MUSIC BOX AUTOMATON. Key wind movement in a rectangular box with oval flip-up lid which when wound has bird pop-up and sing. Four hallmarks to base, one an oval with “925”, the other “M”, another is “PHV” and another which is illegible. Slide on side works mechanism. The engine turned enameling is in a light turquoise blue with zig-zag decoration. The top oval lid has scene of gypsies playing instruments. SIZE: 2″ h x 4″ w x 2 1/2″ d. LARGE BUGLER FIGURE AUTOMATON. The fantastic Shakespearean-looking automaton may have been used in a large department store such as Macy’s or FAO Schwartz at one time. This gentleman with bugle is mounted on a large wooden box. He is electrified and is really unusual. The bugler’s belly and back open, possibly to hold a clock, like his counterpart. Composition head. When plugged in his motor makes a noise but he doesn’t seem to respond. He probably needs to have some work done. SIZE: Approx. 6’8″ t. CONDITION: Mannequin seems to be in generally good condition. Uniform is still intact and in basically good condition but soiled. One can see some parts inside but it is difficult to determine whether it just needs some adjustments or a major overhaul. LARGE CLOCK/MAN FIGURE AUTOMATON. This peculiar gentleman looks as if he could be an extra in Alice in Wonderland, but possibly a decoration for a large department store. Mounted on a large wooden box. When plugged in clock man flags his arms up and down on either side. He has a clock built in his belly and allover costume. SIZE: Approx. 7’9″ t. It is difficult to determine what the condition is of the mechanism on the clock man and whether it should do more. A very neat albeit unusual piece. 1-27672 (1,500-2,500)

SUPERB 19TH CENTURY SEVRES FIGURE. This lavish Sevres figure depicts what is purportedly Marie Antoinette in her extravagant sedan chair. The rococo design chair has all-over gilt and delicately painted vignettes of court scenes with maids and gentlemen. The underside marked with the Sevres “S” and scalloped border. This figure descended from a Maine family whose ancestor was an ambassador to Russia from the United States during the late 19th C.
