*INCREDIBLE, FRESH TO MARKET, HIGH ORIGINAL CONDITION, 20 BORE PARKER “A1 SPECIAL” HAVING FINE SCROLL ENGRAVING AND GOLD INLAY, WITH ORIGINAL LEG O’ MUTTON CASE.

SN 234484. Cal. 20 ga. O frame. 2-5/8″ Chambers. This extraordinary gun matches all specifications in PARKER GUN IDENTIFICATION & SERIALIZATION ledger, with its 28″ Peerless steel bbls, having all correct factory markings on its nicely swamped top rib (with two ivory beads), engine turned bbl flats, and damascened lumps. Loop is damascened and top of splinter is engine turned, as are ejector kickers. Breech ends of bbls have 2-1/4″ triangles of well cut small scroll in front of geometric bands. Muzzles have 1/8″ engraved and geometric bands. Small sized Parker hammerless action with engine turned water table and breechface, correctly marked for grade and SN, is well filed with three beads around fences, Chevron on top lever, and raised cyma curve scrolls at transition of action sides to bottom. Action also features automatic safety (S inlaid in gold) and gold plated double triggers. with checkered finger blades (front trigger is articulated, a very rare feature on Parker guns). Action is engraved with near full coverage well cut small scroll within geometric borders surrounding semi relief circular vignettes of game birds on sides of action. A pheasant flies over rail fence on left side, and a woodcock flits over conifers on right. “PARKER BROS” is in small rectangle on each side of action. Bottom of action has more of this small profuse scroll, and trigger plate has circular relief gold inlaid vignette of a ruffed grouse flying over treetops. These engravings are very unusual and unprecedented in illustrated “A1 Special” Parkers, and obviously special ordered. Gold inlays of the quality of the grouse on this gun, are generally only seen on “Invincible” grade guns, and are very scarce on any Parker. Scroll engraved trigger guard has SN relief gold inlaid on tang. Wonderfully marbled and nicely figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/4″ over skeleton steel buttplate. The buttplate itself has nearly full coverage fine scroll engraving, matching action. Butt checkering is of fancy outline with modified fleur-di-lis intrusions at top and bottom. Other stock embellishments are typical of “A1 Specials” but unique to this gun, with sunken checkered side panels bisected by ribbons and with floral carving at back and front. Attenuated fleur-di-lis drop points are exceptionally well carved in high relief, and especially attractive, far superior in execution to that seen on most “A1 Specials”. The very fancy checkering pattern is also extraordinary, and differs from the norm, with a large amount of carved intrusion of acanthus with extra flourishes behind top tang, in front of comb, and behind trigger guard tang. Long intrusions of checkering up toward the comb and along toe line, are unprecedented. Toe line is also embellished with large fancy outline rectangular gold crest plate, with geometric engraved border, and emblazoned with initials “F. R. F.” Splinter forend with engine turned iron and ejector patent date is also checkered matching buttstock with unprecedented intricacy with more foliate carving, similar in execution to that found on “Invincible” gun no. 230329, except without ribbons. Bore diameter: left -.620, right – .619. Bore restrictions: left – .024 (IMod), right – .011 (Lt mod). Wall thickness: left – .020, right – .022. Drop at heel: 2-1/4″, drop at comb: 1-5/16″. Cast off about 1/4″. Weight: 6 lbs. 4 oz. LOP: 14-1/4″. This gun comes with its orig tan leather leg o’ mutton case unmarked as to maker, but stamped “46” and “28” on end flap, and has brass plated Eagle Lock Co latch. A side pocket with three straps contains 3-pc birch BGI cleaning rod. PROVENANCE: Parker Gun Collectors letter stating that the shotgun was completed on July 25, 1930, and confirming all specifications. Special Note: This item(s) contains plant or animal properties that may be covered by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We have taken care to ensure that this item(s) meets the standard for sale under the ESA. However, certain states and other countries have laws that are more restrictive than the ESA. It is the bidder’s responsibility to ensure that it is lawful to purchase or transport this item(s) into their state, and to obtain the necessary import and export approvals. Delay or failure to obtain any such permit or approval does not relieve the buyer of paying for the item(s) and consummating the purchase. CONDITION: Unbelievable, original, untouched. Bbls retain 95% plus orig blue (possibly an old factory re-blue as the engraving is a bit soft) with only a few light flecks of oxidation on top of right bbl near breech, and 1″ x 1/4″ scratched area on right bbl toward muzzle. Breech ends of bbls show some staining from case induced storage rust on breechface and ejectors. Action retains well over 90% of its orig case hardening color with some attractive silvering to beads, fences, and thumbpiece at top lever. Color is thinned a bit from normal hand wear on bottom, forend iron (which has a couple of rust stains at bottom), and on latch. Trigger guard retains most of its orig blue, silvered on edges of bow, and considerably thinned, almost to silver, on tang. Stocks retain nearly all of their orig hand rubbed oil finish which is dry, and untouched, with some somewhat open grain, and with a few marks, most notably three dings on right side; two near comb, and one fairly deep scratch across checkering to trigger guard tang. There is also a 1-1/2″ scratch along row of diamonds in left hand checkered flourish into comb, otherwise checkering has very slight wear, and is a bit dirty. Buttplate retains a considerable amount of its blue, with some flaking and discoloration due to oxidation. Bores are excellent, with no visible imperfections, except for a dent/ ding about 6″ back from muzzle on side of right bbl, with pre mentioned scratches on exterior. Bbl has not had recent cleaning and there is some fouling in right tube. Action is tight. Mechanically excellent. Case is excellent, straps and handle intact, end flap detached. A fabulous find most likely the finest small bore high grade Parker in existence. THE PARKER STORY estimates eleven 20 ga “A1 Specials” were made, 3 with 28″ bbls.. 51471-1 MGM142 (125,000-200,000) C&R; ESA – Lot 1414

It is engraved in “D” style with 80% coverage varying sized scroll surrounding vignettes of dogs and game; pointer on left, setter on right, and four pheasant on the trigger plate. “PARKER BROS” is on scrolled band on each side of action. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. Typical splinter forend has steel tip and usual release. Bore diameter: left -.730, right – .730. Bore restrictions: left – .037 (full), right – .010 (IC). Wall thickness: left – .025, right – .027. Drop at heel: 2-11/16″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Cast: Neutral. Weight: 7 lbs. 6 oz. LOP: 13-3/4″(13-3/4″ is the length of pull specified for Annie Oakley). At the turn of the century, no other duo promoted “Wild West Entertainment” and exhibition shooting, more so than “Little Sure Shot”, Annie Oakley, and her husband/manager Frank Butler. They met and began their lifelong personal and professional relationship after upstart 15 year old Annie defeated the seasoned Frank during a OH shooting competition in 1881. As a shooting team they used many Parker shotguns. Initially, during their 16 year tenure with Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show through 1901, and afterwards conducting private exhibitions and demonstrations through the early 1920s. Parker factory records show no fewer than 27 guns ordered by and shipped to Frank Butler during this time, some orders noting “For Miss Annie”. Each had their own order unique gun specifications based on their stature and shooting preferences. Annie preferred lighter guns with shorter stocks, Frank favored longer and more robust configurations. Parker factory records indicate #95819 was ordered on April 9, 1900 and shipped May 26th to Frank E. Butler c/o The Buffalo Bill Show in Troy NY. According to Order Book 48 its specs were LOP 14-1/8″, DAC 1-1/2″, DAH 2-1/2″; Wt 7-1/2 lbs; Chokes Cyl/Full; Trigger Pull 3-1/2 & 4 lbs; Lyman sight and No Safety. These specs would mirror those for Frank Butler’s use. The discrepancy between these original factory specs and those now observed were noted and discussed as early as August 1923 in an correspondence to Mr. E.F. Wagner from the Parker Gun Co. regarding the gun’s shortening of the stock by 3/8″ and its history. In 1923, the Butlers were seriously injured in an auto accident which greatly curtailed their shooting. Many of their working guns were sold off during their long recovery. It is believed that Wagner came into possession of #95819 during this time with twin ivory bead sights. It is very likely that the gun’s alteration and shortening of the stock was done to accommodate Annie’s shooting preference during period of use prior to 1923. PROVENANCE: Copies of 2002 & 2016 Parker Factory Letters stating configuration from Order book No. 48. Copy of 1923 dated correspondence on Parker letterhead inquiring about alteration and history of #95819. We have taken care to ensure that this item(s) meets the standard for sale under the ESA. However, certain states and other countries have laws that are more restrictive than the ESA. TRULY SPECTACULAR AND INCREDIBLY RARE AMERICAN MADE DRILLING SHOTGUN BELIEVED TO BE A PARKER BROS PROTOTYPE.

NSN. Cal. 12 ga x 12 ga x .38-55. 30″ Damascus steel bbls over blued steel rifle bbl. Full length Damascus top rib with high polished Nitre-blued rifle sights and two small orig screws in rib toward breech. Choked Mod/Mod in shotgun bbls. This hammer gun has two triggers with front push cocking lever. Thumb-push opener which looks a lot like those seen on early Nichols and LeFever hammer guns. Capped full pistol grip buttstock with long trigger guard tang checkered in two-point pattern 13-3/4″ LOP over unique deer and stag game scene carved and checkered buttplate. Silver shield in toe. Buttstock is of incredibly high quality dense grain beautifully figured French Walnut and is quite striking. Unusual short rounded splinter forearm with Deeley release and horn tip checkered in fancy three-point flat top muller bordered pattern. Receiver is fabulously engraved in a comparable to about a Grade 4 Parker hammer gun pattern with pointing dog in field scene on both sides surrounded by Parker type scroll and flowing wave border pattern. Bottom of action with ducks in marsh scene towards front, flying goose engraved on rear lug all surrounded by well-executed Parker Grade 4 type scroll work. Fences are sculpted like a Grade 5 Parker. Hammers are nicely scroll engraved and tops are fully and finely checkered and knurled. Bbls have doll’s head extension – A John Nichols owned patent. Rifle bbl is cocked by pushing the forward lever towards breech and depressing the rear trigger to fire. According to the Parker story Gunther, Mullins et al, pg. 106 Parker Brothers acquired from former Dan LeFever partner, John Nichols, the patents for bbl to frame locking arrangement including the checked hook and pin design, the thumb push button to open action and others. Also obtained in 1881 from John Nichols by Parker was the patent for the doll’s head extension which this gun has. Known to this cataloger for many years, this gun has always been a LeFever/Parker enigma and more often that not has been identified as a Barber and LeFever product. It wasn’t until recently when rereading “The Parker Story” that this discovery of the gun most likely being a Parker prototype was made. The engraving, the case color, the sculpting all screamed of Parker. Also included is the orig bullet starter which has most of the orig high-polished blue on the front knob. The gun balances in front of the hinge. The quality of the fit and finish cannot be overstated. Weight: 10 lbs. 7 oz. with bullet starter. CONDITION: Extraordinarily fine and near mint. Breech face appears unmarred indicating this as a test fired only gun. Bbls retain nearly all of their bold orig black and white Damascus pattern just starting to tone with a minor area or two of staining. Browned rifle bbl on bottom is excellent and rich in color retaining most of its orig finish with minor handling marks and a scratch or two. Receiver retains virtually all of its dark, bold and orig case color with what appears to be some orig lacquer on top tang near hammers and in other protected areas. Screws are near perfect. Buttstock and forearm are also exceptional and retain nearly all of their orig hand-rubbed finish with a few minor scratches and light rub marks. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are crisp. Gun is tight and functions flawlessly. This is truly one of the finest American made drillings to come to market in many years and the Parker/LeFever connection makes this a most interesting and collectable American sporting gun suitable for the most advanced collector. 51611-3 JSL (20,000-35,000) – Lot 1429

UNIQUE, UNMARKED, EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH GRADE LEFEVER EJECTOR GUN BEAUTIFULLY FILED, VERY LITTLE ENGRAVING WITH EXTRA BARRELS.

SN 15193. Cal. 12 ga. 2-5/8″ Chambers. 28″ and 30″ Damascus bbls, both have matted, concave ribs. 30″ Set is only marked with SN. 28″ set has SN but has additional number “15741”. (The second set of numbers usually denotes either the extra bbls, or later factory work. Most likely this number simply denotes the extra set of bbls.) Both sets are beautifully struck and polished, and have very unusual double ogee raised areas near juncture of action, where most high grade Lefevers have only the single/ rear ogee. 30″ Bbls are somewhat darker in color, and do not have nearly the definition to the Damascus pattern as do the 28″ bbls. Case hardened, Lefever type action with pivoting bolt, later style cocking hook, and in-frame ejectors has early type sideplates incorporating sears and trigger pull adjustment screws, along with usual cocking indicators. SN of this gun predates the present cocking and ejector system, and this gun was undoubtedly returned to the factory for these improvements at a much later date. Early style cross pin has been removed and holes plugged with ivory. Action is beautifully filed with fine fillets and beads. Rear portions of lockplates are stepped, as is found in only the highest grade Lefevers (B and up). Fences are filed in atypical graduated arcs. Most high grade Lefevers have some form of cloverleaf carving to fences. The only engraving consists of well done geometric borders around top lever and along sides of top strap, along with some borders around screw heads, which have very fancy sunburst engraving. Plain case hardened trigger guard has a bit of border engraving at tang, along with SN. Exceptionally fine, beautifully figured and marbled European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14″ over checkered hard rubber buttplate, as is most often seen on D.M. Lefever guns. Drop points are of nicely carved arrowhead type. Checkering is of the first order in point pattern with line borders, and chip carving around base above unusual checkered hard rubber grip cap. There are more closely spaced borderless checkered flairs up toward comb and butt in fancy outline separated from main checkering by thin ribbons. Comb is fluted in typical Lefever high grade style. A vacant gold shield is on toe line. Matching splinter forend with large inset fancy horn tip, is near fully checkered with various spacings, borderless, in very fancy pattern with ribbons separating panels. Rear panel behind late style steel escutcheon is in the form of a shield. 30″ BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.745, right – .745. Bore restrictions: left – .031 (full), right – .031 (full). Wall thickness: left – .040, right – .041. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Cast: Neutral. Weight: 7 lbs. 9 oz. LOP: 14″. 28″ BBLS: Bore diameter: left -.746, right – .745. Bore restrictions: left – .020 (mod), right – .007 (IC). Wall thickness: left – .039, right – .040. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Cast: Neutral. Weight: 7 lbs. 5 oz. LOP: 14″. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Jim Beckley. CONDITION: Excellent, mostly original, as found. 30″ Bbls retain nearly all of what is most likely an old re-brown with a few light marks. 28″ Bbls retain approx 95% fine orig brown with fine definition to pattern, lightened just a bit around forend, and with some lightly rubbed spots. Action retains about half of its orig case hardening color, which is quite vivid where protected. Lockplates retain over 80% of their color. Color is very strong on trigger guard bow, silvered somewhat on edges, and at grip. Stocks retain nearly all of what appears to be their orig hand rubbed oil finish, with a number of light marks, grain slightly raised, checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent, with a hint of frosting in 28″ bbls. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. A wonderful, highly unusual Lefever that certainly raises more questions than it answers. Certifiable antique ivory front bead. 51452-2 (12,500-17,500) ESA – Lot 1431
