SN S317353. Cal 44 MAG. Smith & Wesson royal blue finish with scarce 5″ ribbed bbl, red ramp front & white outline rear sights with bobbed target hammer spur and altered smooth target trigger. Revolver is mounted with 2-pc ivory grips that have a raised carved steer head on the right side and the initials “E M K” on the left. Both grips are marked on the inside that they were made by “J.M. Evans” of San Jose, CA. Mr. Keith employed Mr. Evans to make grips for many of his handguns so obviously these grips would have been made prior to Mr. Keith’s death in 1984, probably shortly after Mr. Keith received this revolver from Smith & Wesson in 1969. Bbl is marked “SMITH & WESSON” on the left and “44 MAGNUM” on the right. Right side of frame has the usual Smith & Wesson address and the sideplate, in addition to Mr. Keith’s signature also has the Smith & Wesson trademark. This revolver was gifted to Mr. Keith by Smith & Wesson in August 1969. Accompanied by a Smith & Wesson factory letter which furnishes some historical information on the Model 29 and states that this revolver was shipped August 15, 1969 “and delivered to Elmer Keith, in Salmon, Idaho, a great gun writer and legend in his field”. Also accompanying is a copy of the orig invoice for this revolver showing special 5″ bbl and engraving ordered. In 1986 this revolver was donated by Mr. Keith’s wife & son to benefit the Elmer Keith Museum Foundation and The Outstanding American Handgunner Awards Foundation. Mr. Keith was the very first recipient of the Outstanding American Handgunner Award. Additionally accompanied by a letter dated April 22, 1986 over the signature of Mr. Keith’s son, Theodore F. Keith which details the donation information and identifies this revolver by description and SN. Accompanying is a copy of page 27 of March/April 1986 issue of American Handgunner magazine advertising the sealed bid auction for this revolver with pictures of both sides. Also accompanying are copies of the cover and 2 interior pages of the Outstanding American Handgunner Awards magazine, again picturing this revolver and advertising that it will be auctioned. Subsequently Smith & Wesson produced a commemorative copy of this very revolver called The Elmer Keith Commemorative. Also accompanied by a brown leather covered trunk case by Gun Ho with tiger striped cloth lining. *WILD AND CRAZY A.W. PETERSON .22LR LUGER CONVERSION, POSSIBLY ONE OF A KIND.

NSN. Cal. 22. Extremely interesting and unnecessarily complicated .22 LR single shot pistol based on a standard Luger frame and marked in the area of the previous breechblock “REMODELED BY / A.W. PETERSON & SON / DENVER”. 5.25″ sleeved bbl having a vertically adjustable front sight and a horizontally adjustable rear sight. The hinged bbl and receiver assembly are released by depressing a plunger mounted to the left side of the frame and rotating the attendant arm downward. At the same time, a spring inletted into the right frame rail pushes against the adjacent button, connected to the extractor, to lift the cartridge out of the chamber. The conversion also implements an external hammer and uses the magazine more as a place holder than a feeding device. Mag now presents as an in-the-white shell secured to a newly manufactured wood plug with two hollowed pins. Checkered walnut panels modified from the orig Luger and grip screws replaced by smaller head screws with a washer. PROVENANCE: The Esteemed Collection Of Noted Expert And Author Warren Buxton. CONDITION: Presents with at least 98% reapplied rust blue with only slight sharp edge thinning. The small parts are in comparable condition, suggesting that this converted pistol, admittedly awkward to use, was shot very little. Mirror bright bore. Perfect manual mechanics. You can be the only one on your block, and probably the only one in your shooting club, with this pistol, the ultimate oddity for a Luger collector! 51568-29 LMA (1,500-3,000) C&R – Lot 1564

NSN. Cal. 45ACP. The High Standard .45 ACP pistol was developmentally very similar to the Grant Hammond as previously evaluated by the U.S. Military. It had the same bbl construction, a very similar bolt, the same type of external hammer and a very similar safety and grip. That said, the pistol was never put into production, and according to Scott Meadows, author of “US Military Automatic Pistols, 1894-1920″, there was no record of military interest. This pistol functions as a delayed blowback, has a 6” bbl with pinned front sight and a fixed rear sight that doubles as a retainer to help keep the bolt assembly in place. At the rear of the bolt on each side, are a large set of vertically serrated ears to help in its retraction. In front of the frame is a large knurled knob, made of two concentric cylinders of dissimilar diameter. The larger, inner cylinder has a flat surface that when turned to be parallel to the receiver allows the slide assembly to come off the frame. Mounted on the left side of the frame is a sear blocking safety lever. Behind the trigger is a checkered push button magazine release. Several small parts are missing from the right side of the frame including what is likely the bolt hold open/release and possibly a magazine accelerator. Checkered walnut grips, each secured with a single screw near base. The magazine is typical High Standard design with large checkered follower button, sgl extended viewing slot on right side and elongated floor plate secured with two pins. This exact gun was the subject of a 1981 American Rifleman Magazine article of which a copy of the article is included in this lot. PROVENANCE: The Frank H. Wheaton, III Collection. CONDITION: Approximately 97% orig rust blue with sharp edge wear and a number of scratches on right side of receiver, most in the area of the missing parts. Crisp grips with sharp checkering and minimal losses. VG condition magazine that is a little difficult to extract. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Perfect manual mechanics except as related to missing parts previously detailed. Regardless of incomplete status, still an impressive pistol and one of the rarest High Standards. 51516-6 (25,000-35,000) C&R – Lot 1621

*RARE WHITE MERRILL EXPERIMENTAL .38 CAL PISTOL, FIRST VARIATION.

NSN. Cal .38. After the M1907 White-Merrill pistol with its one-handed cocking features was rejected by the US military, Merrill went to work on another pistol design he hoped would be of more interest. In 1908, J.C. White developed a large .38 Cal. automatic pistol that functioned as a delayed blowback with an internal hammer and an eight shot magazine. 7-1/2″ round bbl with pinned front sight. Horizontally adjustable rear sight fastened to the receiver. At the rear of the bolt are two coarsely checkered panels for retraction, the right panel extending to serve as a coverplate over the chamber. Attached to the left side of the frame is a ridged plate to move the holster away from the cocking lever whose positions were denoted: “Half Cock” and “Full Cock”, the half-cock position serving as the safety. Each grip plate made of smooth brown Bakelite and secured with two small screws. Single column magazine with brass follower, seven indicator holes numbered 2-8, is in the white. Made with a separate piece for the spine that is screwed into place with eight screws. An additional screw is used to secure the front of the floorplate. This example, with no manufacturer markings or SN, has a mechanical issue in that the bolt cannot be fully retracted to examine the chamber or cock the action. Furthermore, the half cock and full cock lever, while tensioned, do not operate as intended. Included with this gun is a set of copies of the original J.C. White patent No. 888,560 for this prototype design. Also, a hang tag from early owner, Alex Montgomery. Montgomery was one of the very first major collectors of early experimental pistols. This exact pistol is illustrated in a display article by Montgomery on pp.53-62 of World’s Guns and Other Weapons, 1958. PROVENANCE: The Frank H. Wheaton, III Collection. CONDITION: The pistol, likely completed with a thin coat of rust blue, has transitioned to a mellow grey over 70% of its surface. Excellent Bakelite grips. Magazine body and floorplate are bright metal with minimal oxidative toning. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Even though the mechanics need adjustment, this is still a rare developmental pistol that, while never considered by the Ordinance Dept, is usually grouped together with those kinds of arms. 51516-4 LMA (9,500-15,500) C&R – Lot 1625

*HIGH STANDARD T-3 EXPERIMENTAL PISTOL, SECOND VARIATION, WITH SLIDE ACCELERATOR.

SN 4. Cal. 9mm. In 1947, the U.S. Army Air Force began looking for a more compact pistol to replace the Model 1911 A1. The desired characteristics were set forth in a memorandum dated August 1947. Several companies including High Standard and Colt sought to compete for the new contract. High Standard submitted a series of pistols based on the T-3, the first samples completed in June 1948. All guns functioned as straight blowbacks with sgl action/dbl action and an exposed hammer. The grips were checkered black plastic, and the aluminum trigger guard designed to fold forward under the receiver for easier trigger access when using mittens or gloves. Several series of guns were submitted for testing with the example at auction one of the earliest second series guns. This pistol had its normal front sight milled down and a new front sight included as part of the attached nosecap, made with angled plates to interdigit with a ported bbl to accelerate slide recoil. The rear sight is drift adjustable. Takedown lever is mounted on the left side of the frame with the safety (this one non-functional) mounted on the left side of the tang. All second series pistols had an updated frame with push button magazine release dimensioned to use a 13 shot dbl column magazine per the Browning HP pistol. This one comes with an orig Inglis magazine whose floorplate is marked “JI”. Despite the improvements, the updated pistols were still satisfactory, prompting their return from Springfield Armory and High Standard’s proceeding with its third and final type of T-3. This exact gun was the subject of a 1984 Gun World Magazine article and there is also correspondence with High Standard Head of Sales Bill Donovan included herein. PROVENANCE: The Frank H. Wheaton, III Collection. CONDITION: This pistol is largely in the white, except for a blued takedown lever and safety, with moderate staining of the slide. The aluminum frame is a light grey and there is only minimal discoloration of the folding trigger guard. Excellent condition grips and Inglis magazine. Mirror bright bore with strong rifling. Perfect manual mechanics except for the inoperative safety. 51516-8 LMA (8,500-15,000) C&R – Lot 1635
