ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) THE CLYDE LINE’S “S.S. APACHE”. Monumental oil on canvas ship portrait of the “Apache”. To our knowledge, the largest painting that Jacobsen ever produced. The S.S. Apache with completed in August 1891 by the Reeder & Sons, of Baltimore, MD and weighed 416 tons being 190’ in length. Made of an iron hull and housed three guns. The Apache was the first to establish a direct passenger service between New York and Miami. The Apache was also featured on many postcards and tourist ephemera in the southern U.S. This monumental canvas shows the black hulled three-deck steamer traveling right to left with low points of land off bow and stern which is believed to be Florida. A three-mast sailing ship is moored off its port bow and several sails are seen on horizon. Three men in a dory row away from boat. Name is emblazoned on the front bow as well as on top of the pilot house. The Apache ship flag off front mast, the Company flag off back mast. The U.S. flag flies off the stern, all on a choppy white tip greenish/blue water. Signed lower right and dated “1917”. Housed in a magnificent 7” reeded gilt frame with gold liner. This painting by Antonio Jacobsen was originally de-accessed by the Seamans Church Institute on New York City. In 1999 the painting was conserved by Yost Studio in New York City. The restoration included the removal of the old wax lining and relining with beva. The old over paint was stripped off and the painting was cleaned and properly restored. Most of the current inpainting applied by the Yost team was to conceal staining or discoloration which occurred during the process of aging. SIZE: 47-3/4” x 95-1/2”. CONDITION: Some restoration with inpainting, craquelure. Very good. 8-87455 (40,000-60,000)

Pettit. “…Two things I am charged by the General to write to you upon – One is to prevent any more wood being cut on Wm. ANDREW JACKSON (1767-1845) SIGNED LETTER. 7th President. 8” x 10” autographed letter signed, two pages with a second free frank signature on the reverse, Washington, April 8, 1824. To Iona Dayton of New Jersey. “…The situation in which the good feelings of a portion of my country, have thought proper to place me, is one with which I had nothing to do. I asked it not, nor was insinuated, even to any, that I considered myself calculated for so responsible a trust, or in the least desired it. That it has heretofore been in my power to be of some service & benefit to my country, many are willing to admit; that willingness added to the confidence, I hope not a misplaced one, which they reposed on me, induced with some a desire that I should be called to administer the offices of the Government. Inasmuch then, as the relation I t present occupy to the country, is one in which the free expression of the public will has placed me, there would be an evident impropriety in my saying or doing aught in relation to it. My friends therefore may fully confide in this, whatever another may say at any time to the contrary, that under no circumstances shall I be found entering in to arrangements, plans, or even be___with any. The people have placed my name before the country, it is of course a matter with which they, not I, have anything to do. It would be a matter of great satisfaction to me (should I be called to act,) that the good opinion you and others are pleased to entertain toward me, shall in nothing be forfeited. My object then, as it was has been, will be to discharge my duty properly, & with a view to the best interest of my country…” In 1824, Jackson, representing the Democrats, ran against John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. Adams received fewer electoral votes and fewer popular votes required for victory, so the United States House of Representatives decided the election on February 9, 1825. Thirteen state delegations voted for John Q. Adams, seven for Jackson, and three for Crawford. Since Henry Clay finished fourth in electoral votes, he was not eligible for selection by the House. However, as Speaker of the House, he threw his support behind Adams and was subsequently appointed Secretary of State, leading critics to call the appointment the “Corrupt Bargain”. By 1828 Jackson had garnered enough support to win numerous state elections and control of the Federal administration in Washington. 9-71975 (12,500-17,500)

FABULOUS CARVED ARMORED PARKER CAROUSEL FIGURE. Colors are vibrant, playful and spirited with red, green, yellow, blue, purple, white, black, gold and orange. This jumper horse has a cropped or roached mane with glass jewels embracing the outer rim and the horse’s face on the romance side or show side. The trapping or caparison is highly detailed. The romance side has fish scale armor with every scale in a contrasting different color trimmed yet again in another color. As would be expected for a horse in armor he has a spear on the front of his head with two rings. There are elegant yet playful scrolls embracing the horses’ face armor and around his body below his neck. There is a round red shield with a gold painted crown in the center on the front of the horse below his head. The horses’ teeth and tongue, like everything else here, is very well detailed and pronounced with white teeth and a slightly lolling red tongue. The saddle blanket is so intricately detailed it is hard to put into words. Again it has the fish scale style design with a patriotic star surrounded by a green, yellow and red border finishing off with a free flowing fringe. The saddle itself has great shape and color with deeply carved tobacco leaves on the cantle. There is a decorative medallion on the romance side with flying birds around the outer edge with a Victorian woman in a wild plume feather hat in the center. Underneath all the colorful armor and the saddle blanket you have a striking statuesque black horse with a highly carved white tail. This carousel horse dates from the early 1900’s and judging form his size and detailed beauty he was a front row horse. It is mounted underneath by the original iron pole on to a modern wood base. The horse has Parker’s signature metal horseshoes on all four feet which read CW PARKER LEAVENWORTH KAN. Charles Wallace Parker was born in Griggsville, Illinois in 1864. By 1905 Parker had four full sized carnivals on tour throughout the country. The Parker “Carry-Us-Alls” (his play on words for carousel) continued to be the most important part of the amusement business. He built hundreds of small traveling carousels that were used by carnivals This wonderfully detailed carousel figure is in very old park paint and most appealing. SIZE: Approximately 3” h x 6’6” l.
