RARE WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH STOCK TICKER. One of the earliest patented and commercially viable inventions to spring forth from the fertile mind of Thomas A. Edison is this “Universal Ticker” for use by Wall Street. Manufactured and sold between approximately 1873 and 1900. Those that escaped the WWII scrap drives were ordered to be destroyed by Western Union in the early 1960s. It bears the serial number 8024. The working mechanism is constructed on a heavy cast iron base which states “Quotations furnished by the Western Union Telegraph Co. Apply to local manager”. This example comes complete with glass dome (possibly of more recent vintage). SIZE: 13-1/2″ t. x 8” diam. CONDITION: It appears to be in near excellent condition with some very minor paint chipping to cast iron base and complete, but as we are not quite up to speed on the nuances of electro-magnetic engineering, we’re selling the ticker as shown and can not guarantee that every nut and bolt is there. 1-8136 (6,000-8,000)
