CLASSICAL MARBLE STATUE OF HERAKLES KILLING SERPENTS. 2nd half 19th century. This marble statue, after the antique, depicting Herakles (Hercules) as a toddler, seated on a rock plinth and smiling with right hand raised to his mouth. In his left hand is held a serpent’s head, the body of which is beneath the boy, a tendril of vinery entwining the child’s legs. This rendering is from the mythological tale wherein Hera, wife of Zeus, attempted the murder of her infant stepson Herakles in his crib by sending two serpents while he slept. The young Herakles killed the snakes and laughingly threw their bodies out of the crib, incurring the greater hatred of Hera and admiration from the other gods on Olympus. SIZE: 38-1/2″ h. SIGNED (Russian) CAST IRON SCULPTURE OF A BUFFALO. The large black painted cast iron figure shows a standing buffalo with head up and tail bent down against a tree trunk and naturalistic base. Signed in the base in Cyrillic and dated “97”. This large and interesting sculpture is made in two parts. The buffalo attached to the base in six bolted areas. Under the base are two signature areas in Cyrillic and dated “1975” “CCCP”. Our understanding is that one of the marks indicates the work is by one of the Bah family and the foundry to be the Kaslinski Foundry Works. In the research for this sculpture we have been told that the first of these iron animal figures were made in the 19th Century by Robert Romanovich Bah along with Nikolay Romanovich Bah (the father) who was most known for his statues of animals of which the buffalo is considered the best one. Research indicates that there was an edition of 30 and were collected by the hierarchy of Russian society. There is speculation that the buffalo itself in this sculpture is older and possibly 19th Century which has been attached to a newer base. One of the ways that this would be possible is if a figure was found in the Kaslinski Foundry and never mounted on a base in the 19th Century. The buffalo’s finish is referred to as “the old Kuzbaski finish” which was not used after 1890. Though we cannot confirm the above the information it was provided in Russian from a knowledgeable collector of these statues. SIZE: 15″ h x 22″ l x 10″ w. PROVENANCE: From a South Carolina home. CONDITION: Finish shows small rust spots, generally in very good condition. 9-95305 (4,000-6,000)
