UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS FIRE STATION. Important and outstanding period painting of what is thought to be the Chelsea, MA fire station. Oil on canvas painting shows a two-story white wood two-door fire station with bell tower. Above the doors are signs “Washington” and “Hook & Ladder”. Out of the left bay comes a man drawn fire carriage having six wheels and apparatus in red and green with white wheels. Three men are tugging on the front rope while several firemen rush to their aid. The bell in the tower is sideways ringing in the troops. A man in a horse drawn wagon turns to see the commotion. Wood houses line the street, each with picket fence fronts. A large white steeple with clock tower is seen behind street. All under a blue and white cloud sky. The painting is untouched and dirty and the sky may show some gray smoke on the right side beyond the houses. Housed in its original lemon gold decorated frame. This painting is a fresh find right out of the Boston area. It is very unusual to find a period rendering of firemen in action in a local New England setting. Research indicates that Chelsea had several fire department buildings, one located off Washington Street which had been moved at one time. Chelsea survived a major fire with Washington Street being part of the conflagration. SIZE: 10” x 12”. CONDITION: Craquelure, discolored varnish and dirt. Untouched. 9-73395 (5,000-10,000)
