SIZE: Buffer to buffer is 24-3/4″ l X 5-1/2″ h. CONDITION: One small dent on top of boiler. This area looks as though it may have been redone at one time. Some flaking near boiler tank. 1947 INDIAN CHIEF ROADMASTER MOTORCYCLE. Excellent example of a matching number motorcycle that has been correctly restored by Indian experts using real Indian parts. Most post-war Chiefs have had parts replaced with imported replica parts, but this one stands out among the rest with full documentation of its professional and correct restoration. With dual saddle and leather saddle bags, this yellow beast with whitewall tires and 74 cubic inch engine looks just like what it would have when brand new. Purchased new in 1947 (it even retains its original 1947 NY plate) it was restored in the early 1980s by Alabama Classic Motorcycles (considered one of the best Indian dealers/restorers in the business at the time). This imaginative vehicle consists of a laminated wood buckboard platform with engine attached to a flywheel/road wheel with engagement lever to put vehicle into motion, two bucket seats (with Briggs & Stratton decals), metal fenders, hand throttle, foot brake, and wooden steering wheel. Likely intended for resort areas, it is a truly fantastic and possibly unique mode of transportation. Comes with custom fitted cloth cover. According to the consignor, the vehicle was purchased by a physician many years ago for his children, but never given to them, which accounts for its near pristine condition. SCARCE WALKER GENERAL STORE OAK SPICE & DRY GOODS COUNTER. This multi-drawer, compartmentalized tall oak cabinet with four large mirror-front drawers below (marked beans, flour, sugar and rice). Above are six smaller swing-down compartments for allspice, white pepper, ginger, mustard and cayenne. Above the third tier with six open compartments which may have been for holding cloth or paper various sized sacks for putting goods in. This is a hard-to-find country store display in nice golden oak. Three of the cast metal handles below marked, “WALKER BIN COMPANY, PENN YAN, NEW YORK”. One handle probably an old replacement. The upper level drawers with cast brass handles, four of which have raised letters, “W.B. CO.”, the other two handles are probably old period replacements. RARE AND OUTRAGEOUS LITHO PAPER ADV FOR HAISH’S BARBED STEEL FENCE WIRE. Dated 1881, this fabulous and extremely rare old lithography for barbed wire fence depicts a red-jacketed and hatted, pipe-smoking rider astride a huge rooster with barbed-wire feet. Various vignettes depict ships and locomotives delivering wire, buffalo, someone mending the fence, wagon trains, etc. Much text including a balloon from the rider reading, “AIN’T I A DAISY, THE COCK OF THE WALK, JUST NOTICE MY SPURS ON BOTH WIRES WALK. JUST MEASURE MY GAIT, A 16’ STRIDE. I’M THE S. BARBED ROOSTER, THE FARMER’S PRIDE.” Jacob Haish (1826-1926) was one of the earliest manufacturers of barbed wire and patented a special shaped barbed wire. SIDNEY ADVERTISING CLOCK. Spectacular wall hanging advertising clock manufactured by the Sidney Clock Co., Owego, New York, circa 1885. In addition to the time clock it also features a separate movement for rotating the bottom drums every five minutes, accompanied by a ringing bell. This allowed the clock to display up to 13 separate advertisements. This particular clock came directly out of the Chapman Hotel in Blenheim, NY where it hung prominently in their lobby from the 1880s until 2003. It features ROG advertisements on the front door for the Middlebury Gazette and the News Printing Office, executed with gold, glitter, and mother of pearl highlights as is much of the lettering. The paper clock face advertises A.W. Stevenson, watchmaker and the ROG top marquee advertises Sullivan & Haynes General Hardware Store. Accompanying this lot is a framed and matted collage of photos and clippings pertaining to the hotel, the clock and their history. SIZE: 28” w x 69” h x 11” d. A photocopied letter of provenance is included documenting the family connection stating the ad “came to me through my grandmother, daughter of Louis Prang…[who] starting in 1875, put out the first Xmas cards in the U.S. They were so successful, the U.S. government issued a stamp in 1975 celebrating the 100th anniversary.
