SPECTACULAR EARLY 19TH CENTURY CHIP CARVED SCANDINAVIAN STORAGE BOX.

Without question this is the finest example of a Scandinavian decorated box that we have ever handled at auction. The top with wonderful chipped and scrolled carvings. The band around the lid dated boldly “1817” with what appears to be the name of the owner carved in the sides of the box, also similarly decorated. The box constructed with wooden pegs and fine strips of birch bark stitching which holds the straps together. The bottom boldly seraphed “no. 127” which is also highlighted in black. The decorations on the side and top also have some residual polychrome decoration. Inside of the lid also inscribed with decoration and in faded ink with what appears to be the owner; again number “no. 127”. SIZE: Approx. 11-1/2” dia, when lid in place 6-3/4” h. CHRISTOPHER DRESSER, FOR MINTONS CACHEPOT.

Last quarter 19th century, English. Porcelain in the aesthetic movement style. Designed by Christopher Dresser for Minton’s LTD China Staffordshire, England in a style known as cloisonne. The pot decorated with a top band of blue simulating sky with Japan-esque stylized clouds above a sea filled with colorful carp and stylized flowers and plants, all figures outlined with a fine line of gold to simulate the wire in cloisonne enamel. Pot is mounted atop feet simulating the head of a bird returning with an “S” scroll. The interior glazed in a soft green with a gold top edge. Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) was a Scottish designer and design theorist, and a pivotal figure in the aesthetic movement. He worked in this style through several media including ceramics and pottery. He was influenced greatly by the decorative arts of Japan and was fortunate to travel to Japan for 4 months during 1876 and 1877 logging approximately 2000 miles. This trip was recorded in “Japan, It’s Architecture, Art and Art-manufacturer’s.” During this journey he represented South Kensington Museum and was commissioned by Tiffany’s of NY to form a collection of art objects. In Japan Dresser was received by the Emperor and was treated as a guest of the nation. This cachepot is a fine example of the ware he designed for Minton’s known a “Cloisonne.” SIZE: 9″ h, 9″ dia.
