RARE ARTIST’S BOX FOR GRAIN PAINTING. Lift lid box has eight paint jars, brushes and ink. Also a fountain pen. Front of the box with metal label “Bartley” which is hinged and falls forward. Included in the box are three Davis patent grainers, which are rubber cylinders with designs for rolling to simulate grain painted surfaces. Instruction booklet and magazine article. DOUGLAS BANE (American, 20th C) COYOTE. Oil on masonite shows a resting coyote nestled against a wood log on snow covered ground. Small dried plants and birch trees surround him. Nice detail. Signed lower right “Douglas Bane 1989”. Housed in a weathered molded wood frame with linen liner. Bane is a native Mainer and is known for his wildlife paintings and carvings. SIZE: 22” x 28”. D. CROSBY BROWN (American, 20th Century) SANDERLINGS AT REID STATE PARK. Large acrylic on board Maine coastal scene shows sandy beach with gentle waves rolling ashore. Eight black and white shorebirds are seen in front of little wave coming ashore. Four are seen in flight. Background shows grass and green tree covered rock ledge at end of beach with small island. A wonderful realistic and detailed Maine scene. This is one of a group of three paintings he created from a study he did of Sanderlings at Reid State Park, Maine. This one being the largest. The smaller of the three was featured in the “Eye of Maine” 1981 calendar published by DeLorme Publishing Co. August illustration. Brown is best known for his wildlife paintings and has been featured on a Downeast Magazine cover, various National Audubon Society publications and is represented in collections at MBNA and Eastern Maine Medical Center. CANE: OUTSTANDING CARVED AND PAINTED FOLK ART SNAKE CANE. Unusual cane has three spiraling red and green snakes on shaft, each with copper bead eyes. The end is a carved dagger with cross hatch type handle with a black rubber end. Top handle is a curved snake section with head having bead eyes and end terminating in a carved face having bead eyes and painted a deep red. On top of snake is what appears to be a carved monkey type face with bead eyes. On side of shaft, below snake, is another carved face which protrudes from the shaft. SERPENTINE FRONT INLAID FOUR DRAWER CHEST. Four graduated drawers, each with decorative line inlay having what appears to be its original oval bale brasses. The conforming top has line inlay to edge, just below top is a frieze inlay decorated with arrow points and book type inlay with connecting line inlay. Bracket base is replaced. This traveling case was obviously something for an Aristocrat or very wealthy traveler. One could imagine this being used in an African safari or a trip down the Amazon. It represents the desired luxury of a world traveler. Large camphor wood and mahogany case has hinged lid having inset brass plaque with crown. Fitted with two brass recessed handles and four brass strap mounts. Front of case has English type family crest. The box is fitted with a removable top compartment which is green felt lined and segmented. It contains six 3-1/2” glass tumblers, six 4” wines, six 4-1/” wines, six 4-1/2” tumblers with etched design, six 4-1/4” tumblers with cut design, six 3-1/2” tumblers, twelve 4” deep wines, ten 2-1/2” wine shaped shot glasses, one 4-1/4” h x 5-1/4” w metal box. Each glass is wrapped in its own felt bag. Bottom compartment has ten 5-1/2” h large tumblers, eight large 5” wine glasses, 6” decanter, two 5-1/2” decanters, a large 6” x 12-1/2” metal box and a 5-1/2” x 8” box. Each glass is wrapped in its own green felt bag. No key is present. SIZE: Case is 13” h x 28-1/4” w x 23-1/4” d. CONDITION: Interior pieces in very good condition. VERY RARE SET OF TEN GENUINE BELTER LAMINATED SIDE CHAIRS. Single Belter side chairs and pairs occasionally will be found but it is very rare to find a set, particularly as large a set as this. An example of the laminated back found on these chairs can be seen in the book “American Furniture of the 19th Century” by Dubrow, page 106. Six of these chairs still retain their original fitted brass castors. SIZE: Each are approximately 34” h to the top of the back. 18” w x 17” seat h. CONDITION: Each of them retain old fabric, much worn and soiled. They are generally structurally sound. A couple of the chairs have small losses. However some need some small repair and some have minor old repairs over the years but generally speaking, not anything major. Finish appears to be original and old. EXQUISITE PAIR OF VIENNA TYPE PORTRAIT PLATES. These magnificent plates are wonderfully decorated. First with two maids playing musical instrument and a putty seated between them blowing a horn. Signed “K. Wildner”. Titled on the reverse “Amor Songs” with blue beehive mark. Framed in brilliant gilt gold with a border of brilliant sapphire blue ornament in delicate gold decoration. This outstanding set features a large framed back sofa in three sections fitted with elaborate carved arms terminating in a carved bearded warrior’s head. The wood with ebony and burled inlay with incised carving and all over elaborate Victorian ornamentation. The matching armchair in very old needlepoint floral design, identically constructed with the same head, also has a matching pair of side chairs. Each with old needlepoint floral seats. Jelliff is noted for producing elaborate ornamental parlor suites such as this and was original from Newark, NJ. SIZE: Approximately 48” to the top of the back of the sofa, 71” at widest x 23” d. OUTSTANDING 9-PIECE COTTAGE PINE BEDROOM SET. A really great example of the hand decorated 19th C furniture. Set consists of a nicely decorated bed, matching mirrored chest, matching commode, matching stand, four chairs and a boudoir rocker (rocker and one side chair have slightly different decoration). Headboard, lavishly decorated with a vignette of nicely painted flowers centered by a scenic panel depicting lake, mountains, sailboat, etc. A particularly nice set, hard to fine in this condition. ATTRIBUTED TO CHILDE FREDERICK HASSAM (American, 1859-1935) LANDSCAPE WITH TREES AND MOUNTAIN. Oil on canvas scene shows a large blue mountain as backdrop to a grassy field in foreground, green trees beyond. Signed lower right “Childe Hassam” in red. Housed in a large antique fancy gesso decorated frame. In looking at the signature area, there is inpainting, possibly an over painted signature or location. This area, when viewed on the back of the canvas, has water damage. The scene is reminiscent of several paintings that Hassam did in the New Hampshire area. SIZE: 20” x 24”. REGENCY CARVED MAHOGANY DROP LEAF SOFA TABLE. Second quarter of the 19th Century. Rectangular reeded edge top with drop leaves having rounded corners. Above a frieze having two drawers on one side and two faux drawers on the other. Each drawer fitted with two brass knobs having lion faces. All supported by two out sweeping reeded top legs with brass cup castor feet on each side. At the end of the frieze and bottom sections of leg post are reeded panels outlined with ebony inlay.
