CARVED IVORY DOG HEAD CANE. Finely modeled and carved Spaniel type dog has a large open mouth, glass eyes and long furry ears. Carved bust form with a round tapered end. Gold plated 1/2” collar mounted on a medium brown hardwood shaft which is probably walnut, ending in a 1-1/4” horn ferrule. SIZE: 35” l. Handle is 2-3/4” x 2”. NICE CARVED FOLK ART WOOD CANE. The top having a clenched fist arm holding snake and a silver attached shield with monogram “CCD”. Below the snake is a pierce carved bracelet, then there is an 8” section with a pot of thistles with animals surrounding it. Above a steeplechase race with three horses and riders. A carved intertwining bracelet, below which is a spiral carved leaf design, below which is a beech leaf design, tapering to a thorny section. Nice dark brown patina. No ferrule. SIZE: 36” l. PAINTED AND CARVED FOLK ART SNAKE CANE. The cane’s top handle has an eagle head wrapped around a mermaid which has a spiraling snake around her, below which is an anchor, whale, and intertwining the cane is a red, white and blue pennant banner with US flag. INTERESTING FOLK ART SNAKE CANE. The cane is punch dated “1937” and signed “F”, has a round knob top, a knobby wood shaft in yellow color which has three snakes. One snake goes through a hole at the top and coming through the other side. There are two horseshoes with a marble inside. A cross embedded with a red jewel. other carvings include: stars, turtles, lizards, arrow, and heart. No ferrule. SIZE: 35-3/4” l. CONDITION: Very good. 9-70952 (400-800)

OUTSTANDING CARVED IVORY MULTIPLE ANIMAL HEAD CANE. L-shaped handle has many animals carved in relief including deer, cat, horse, boar, rhinoceros, bulldog, elephant, lion, fox, antelope, rabbit, eagle, parrot, mouse, and a variety of other dogs. Each animal set with a red or orange bead eye. There are at least twenty different heads. Ivory has black tinting. 1” scale decorated sterling collar which is marked “Sterling R. F. S. & Co.”. RARE AND SUPERB CARVED WOOLY MAMMOTH CANE DEPICTING MISHA THE DANCING BEAR. Carved white bear with detailed fur with pleasant face. Thin gold gilt collar and the shaft is ebonized and has a 5” marvelous lacquer painting of Misha and his trainers playing horns while he dances. Coloring and quality is of what you would expect to find on Russian lacquered boxes. Misha was a European brown bear who was famous in Russian folk lore. SIZE: 34-1/2” l. CARVED IVORY SERPENT HEAD CANE. Well carved head has large and long open mouth with many teeth and large curved tongue. Scale like skin set with large glass eyes. Nice old patina. FINE WALNUT MARBLE TOP CENTER TABLE. Nice Burl walnut panels throughout, the top having a inset white marble top, the frieze having one long drawer. The trestle-type base with outstanding turned center stretcher with decorative finial. The ends with center turned posts surrounded by two pierced carved Burl paneled legs ending in brass caster feet. Circa 1865. PROVENANCE: From a fine Millbridge, Maine estate. FABULOUS SILVER PLATED HUMIDOR WITH HUNTING DOGS. Rectangular box has two hinged top doors each fitted with locks and having open compartments. The lids are mounted, one with a seated 4” dog having game bird in mouth. The other with a 7-1/2” Setter on point. Central divider with a cup shaped match holder and two smaller doors for humidor sponge. Case has repose foliate scroll decoration with flowers and rests on four ball feet. Body sculpted in colors of deep and light red, white and black enamels. The swirling decoration with circles of white and black having trailing pinwheels in white lobes. ELECTRIFIED TIFFANY DOUBLE STUDENT LAMP. Unsigned Tiffany base with replaced shades. REFERENCE: Page 81, figure 61 “Student Lamps of the Victorian Era” for exact base. Center shaped reservoir, telescoping, adjustable height on a twist decorated post with a round stepped base. Two arms which have been electrified hold an interesting emeralite-type shade which have a mushroom closed top. The edges impressed “Pantin depose”. Serial number 23567. Bottom border with square and rectangular small pieces of alternating green, opalescent and red pieces. Shade rests on a heavy base which has four curving scroll arms set with two-light fixture. Early art pottery vase having a grapevine with grape leaves and cluster pattern on one side and Rooks on the other. The capital “G” on the base standing for the ginger colored clay. The shape is #225. The neck and base are incised with pressed shells and geometric patterns. The inside of lip marked “A.R.V.” representing Albert R. Valentien and with “613”. Hinged cover with walnut veneers has lion head pull and opens with a cover inset with cherub musical print. An inner glass cover with ebonized wood trim. Case with burl walnut veneers and three quarter turned columns at corners. Two side handles. Comes with twelve 11-3/4” disks. PROVENANCE: From a Downeast, Maine Collection. OUTSTANDING CARVED AND INLAID FOUR STRING BANJO BY VEGA. “Artist” model, Serial #78151, made in Boston, Mass. The banjo having a figured, carved neck with leaf motif, line inlaid with ebony/rosewood. Four Mother of Pearl thumbscrews, a back resonator in eight matching veneer sections outlined in dark line inlay. The neck having Mother of Pearl inlay all the way through the top shaped section. Housed in a green velvet lined case. PROVENANCE: This banjo was used by Ralph Pooler of Maine in the 1920’s and 1930’s as he toured the Northeast in a small band. SIZE: Neck 25”, Overall 37”. The double handled urn having a front, round hand painted panel of two elegant women seated on a marble bench in a landscape with flowers, trees and water. Unsigned. The urn set on a square plinth having a domed lid with a gilt finial. Whole piece in a deep cobalt ground with heavy gilt embossing, gilt edge highlights and having sections with crosshatching with light blue beads. The double mask handles are in heavy gilt. MONUMENTAL AND OUTSTANDING FOUR-PIECE BIRDSEYE MAPLE CARVED BEDROOM SUITE. The 19th Century four-piece set consists of half tester bed, drop center vanity with mirror, one door mirrored front armoire and carved table. 1) Half tester bed heavily carved all in birdseye maple having a headboard with attached half tester top. Headboard with large carved raised panel horizontal section decorated with inset carved leaves. Crest having an arch with foliate and flower carving under which is a raised panel with relief carved flower and berry vine. Full round columns beside the crest with carved column tops support a cornice carved half tester top having crest carved with leaves and central wood cabochon and leaf carved center. The edge is heavily carved with flowers and leaves. Foot board heavily carved with horizontal panels, carved foliate sections and a rectangular rounded top crest. Posts having decorative molding at base, raised panel bottom section and spiral carved vine decorated top section. Original side rails with carved scroll and leaf corners. Bed is held together with eight bed bolts which are not present. NOTE: The removable finials from the foot board have written on the top of post and bottom of finials names and places of people that presumably have slept on the bed. Names include people from Vermont, New York, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio and England amongst others. SIZE: Bed is 10’5” h to top of crest of the tester x 74-1/2” at widest at top of cornice. Inside of rails is 61” w x 81” l. Foot board is 43” h. Drop Center Vanity is 109-1/2” h x 63-1/2” w x 27” d. Armoire is 122-1/2” h x 75” w x 34-1/2” d. Table is 41” h x 36” w x 24” d. 2) Drop center vanity: In two parts. Bottom section having a center white marble over a large drawer and two side drawers. Having a carved molded edge, paneled front drawers with carved leaves and a multiple stepped molded base. Top section having a central 5’ x 26-1/2” beveled mirror flanked by two small angled mirrors at the back of small alcoves decorated with carved column top pillars and decorative leaf carving. Shelves above support two tall full round columns ending in deep carved capitals supporting the tall crest which has similar carving to bed. Side elements with foliate carving having round discs for mounting lights. 3) Massive armoire : Single door wardrobe fitted with a 66” x 29” bevel edged mirror with decorative molded frame. When opened reveals a segmented interior for hanging and storing clothes. Flanking the door are round columns with heavily carved capitals and side angled corner panels with leaf and other carving. The two panel sides inset with birdseye maple panels. Top crest area with similar but larger carving that is seen in the drop center chest and the bed. 4) Table: One drawer center table with rounded molded edge rectangular top having a frieze containing one long drawer and inset leaf carving which is on all four sides including the drawer front. Supported by four tapered legs with decorative carving ending in four porcelain and brass casters. A bottom shelf with decorative carving acts as stretcher. The primary wood is maple and birdseye maple. Secondary woods include oak, poplar and pine. Someone has suggested that this could be a set made by Mitchells & Rammelsberg. CONDITION: BED Headboard has ended out 8-1/2” bottom of legs. Original base molding to this area is present. Electric switch has been added to the bottom part of headboard. There are only very, very minor imperfections. VANITY: Marble has been repaired. Overall very good with only minor imperfections. Armoire is very good with only minor imperfections. NOTE: OVERALL CONDITION: This is a spectacular set in a warm honey brown finish with extensive carving that is in wonderful condition and we can only find very few insignificant problems. FINE AND INTERESTING GRAND PIANO FORM ENAMEL AND SILVER DESK SET. The long grand piano is enameled on top and all sides. It is decorated with colorful birds, flowers, cherub, insects and mask heads. Piano has three tapered legs ending in caster feet. The bottom of the piano is decorated in rococo style leaf decoration. There are three lines of set red stones along the sides. The front has a push button spring loaded hinged lid which opens to reveal a gilt interior with two covered, removable gilt inkwells and a central flip up watch movement. It has one key wind in front dial. This clock raised when the foot pedal was pushed in, which is not presently functional. The piano’s back hinged lid opens to reveal a shallow compartment with clips for securing metal pens or pencils. The back holds a music box which is wound from underneath. It is wound tight and we have not heard it operate. Both keys for the music box and the watch are present. We have been unable to find any hallmarks, 19th Century, European. OUTSTANDING CARVED CANED AND PAINTED FRENCH BED ORIGINALLY FROM THE MAXFIELD PARRISH HOME. The bed was a museum de-accession from the Cornish, New Hampshire home. The tall headboard having an oval panel with carved hanging basket of flowers flanked by two large pierced flower and leaf motifs and a decorative pierced wreath crest. The open sections have caning and the footboard with similar design having oval with archer’s bow, arrow, and flaming torch. Top cornice heavily carved with carvings below. Top section mounted on two fully carved winged griffin supports. Base having a nicely carved molded top edge below which are two side by side drawers having lion mask handles with trailing vines. Below which are two deeply carved paneled doors with one panel having hunting motif with dead game birds, hunting horn and powder horn with trailing vines. The other with various fish with marsh reed and cattail background. All in heavily carved frames. Side columns and middle column matching with fruit and mask head decoration. Large pitcher has a hook under its large spout to hold a cup and sits atop a cradled stand with identical decoration. Stand allows for the pitcher to be tipped for pouring purposes. FINE THREE TIER COPPER GARDEN FOUNTAIN. The bottom tier having a round footed bowl with six glass lensed lights on the bottom and a ring of water nozzles. The center pedestal raises to a second bowl, the outside fitted with twelve fountain nozzles and six swan decorations and set with three glass lensed lights. The post continues with three cherubs under the third bowl which has a ring of fountain nozzles. Under the top bowl is also a row of nozzles pointed downward and also set with a central lensed light. HANGING FRENCH-STYLE CURIO CABINET. Top area with mirror back and supporting a shaped shelf. Supports are brass figures of women on pedestals and below are four doors, two of which have glass fronts. Edges and panels are trimmed in decorative brass mounts and the wood veneer used is rosewood banding and matched lighter veneers. A very attractive and useful piece.
