JACOB EPSTEIN (Israel, 1921-2003) BARBARA. Bronze Mounted on a swivel top wood stand Unsigned Born on New York City’s Lower East Side, Jacob Epstein moved to London and became a British citizen in 1907. Epstein first studied at the Art Students League and later in Paris at the Academie Julien and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Rodin. During this period he became friends with artists including Modigliani, Picasso and Brancusi, and in 1913 became a founding member of the London Group of Artists; in that year as well, he exhibited at the history making Armory Show in New York City. Arguably one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century Epstein’s highly expressive style was often seen as controversial-not unlike that of his teacher, Rodin. Intrigued by the physical idiosyncrasies of both the man on the street as well as world leaders and luminaries, Epstein sculpted many of the major figures of the 20th century including Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Nehru and George Bernard Shaw. The subject of several books and creator of numerous public art commissions throughout Europe and the United Kingdom, Epstein was granted knighthood in 1950, five years before his death.
