FRAMED HANDSCROLL AFTER LU ZHI (1496-1576) “YUAN YE YAN JI TU JUAN”. Qing Dynasty (18th/19th century) copy of Ming dynasty artist Lu Zhi’s “Yuan ye yan ji tu juan” (Handscroll of Banquet on the Night of the Lantern Festival). Ink and color on paper, finely depicting the gathering of Lu Zhi, Wang Shou, Peng Nian, Wang Guxiang, Wen Peng, amongst others, at Wen Zhengming’s residence on the night of the Lantern Festival. Inscribed with a seven-character quatrain poem, “Above the sky the blue clouds belong to no one; The lamp lights in every house competing with the brilliance of shining stars Mount Jiuhua; Tonight at this literary gathering, in memory of our poet; I take the brush and gracefully paint this picture.” “The horses tread heavily on the silver flowers and raise abundant red dust; In the pavilion on the high cliff, fragrant wine in the green pottery is served; In the presence of brilliant starts, a lovely arbor appears; At the depth of night, being intoxicated, I returned to the city.” Also inscribed, “On the 15th day (lantern festival), in company with Hanfeng (Wang Shou) and others who assembled at banquet in the house of Hengweng (Wen Zhengming), the Literary Chancellor. Each wrote poems for remembrance on this occasion, and I, at the last moment, could not refuse to do the same and keep in harmony with their original rhyme, I completed two stanzas. And Yuanzhou (Lu Shidao), well-known scholar asked me to paint this picture and on it the poem is inscribed. For my humble scholarship, I wish to apologize to him. This was done during the cyclical year of dingwei (1547) of the reign of Jiajing Emperor (1522-1566). Signed “Lu Zhi.” With eight spurious collector’s seals of Xiang Yuanbian: “Zui Li,” “Xiang mo lin fu mi ji zhi yin,” “Zi sun yong bao,” “Shen you xin shang,” “Zi jing suo cang,” “Xiang Yuanbian yin,” and two half seals “Xu lang,” and “Qi.” **Note: The original work of “Yuan ye yan ji tu juan” by Lu Zhi (1495-1576) is currently in the collection of Shanghai Museum. The original bears the artist’s seals “Shu,” “Ping,” and “Bao shan zi,” with colophons by Wen Zhengming, Wang Shou, Peng Nian, Wang Guxiang, Wen Peng, and collector’s seals of Sun Chengze, Liu Shu, and colophons by Wu Hufan. IMPORTANT KOREAN 10-PANEL FOLDING LONGEVITY SCREEN. Yi Dynasty, probably 18th/19th century, Korean. Ink and mineral pigments on textile (possibly silk or fine linen). Scene of the gardens of longevity. Finely painted with various animals including 8 cranes, 4 mythical tortoises and a herd of 10 deer, all numbers associated with the cardinal directions and auspicious numerology. Background in a blue and green style Sung period inspired landscape of mountains, rivers and waterfalls. Ground strewn with lengzhi, longevity fungus and fragment grass. Centerpiece with a pair of grand pine trees with coral trunks and jade green leaves. Sky of yellow clouds with a brilliant red sun. Inscription on the reverse reading “Ten Panels for Long Life”. SIZE: Overall: 82″ h x 165″ w. Painted area overall: 69″ h x 162″ w. PROVENANCE: Descended in the family of Felix E. Spurney of Kensington, Maryland; He received it as a gift from Mr. Thompson, who was in the Diplomatic Corp in Korea. CONDITION: Scenic painted panels retain strong, vibrant colors. The surfaces with minor abrasion. With overall irregular light toning. The ninth and tenth panels with small crescent tears. Ninth and tenth panels detached from each other. The lower unpainted section of each panel with damages and weaknesses overall. Paper backing on all panels with general deterioration and tearing.
