FABULOUS LARGE 18TH CENTURY BUCKET BENCH WITH CUPBOARD. The one piece bench has large shelved base with front shaped apron with shaped sides and half moon cutouts on each end. The sides extend to a inset double door cupboard with turned knobs and shelved interior. The top displays side dovetails and has a small backsplash. The color is a slate blue and has splash staining to sides. Backboards to top section have beaded edge and may have been an early replacement. SIZE: 56” h x 23-3/4” d x 50” w. One in blue outfit, the others in red and black, two holding guns. They are leaving a large dock area with two buildings, one being a post office. Two people are seen in large canoe, two people seen on shore, one fishing. A gap in the river shows a large town and church and farmhouse are seen on left bank. A two-mast sailboat is seen on right side of river. Unsigned. Nicely housed in a gilt carved wood frame with white matte. PROVENANCE: From a Gardiner, Maine home. SIGHT SIZE: 20” x 28”. OUTSTANDING 19TH CENTURY REDWARE ADAM & EVE FIGURE. Probably Pennsylvania. The figures of Adam & Eve stand next to a red apple tree trunk that sprouts five apple and leaf branches. A snake winds around the tree with his head poking out of the top and holding a white apple.. All set on an oval concave base and all over paint decoration. AFTER EDWARD SAVAGE (American, 1761-1817) LIBERTY-GODDESS OF YOUTH GIVING SUPPORT TO THE “BALD EAGLE”. Outstanding early watercolor shows Liberty clad in flowing white draperies and a garland of spring flowers, the newly embodied goddess tramples the symbols of monarchy: a key, the medal and garter of a royal order, and a broken scepter. The eagle, symbol of the Republic, descends on shafts of light, to be nourished by Liberty. The flag of the union, topped by a liberty cap, is visible through the clouds of war, which spew lightning to drive the British fleet from Boston Harbor. Behind is seen a domed building next to a body of water with several sailing ships. On the back is an original penned label with the following: “Liberty in the form of the “Goddess of Youth” giving support to the “Bald Eagle”. Copied by Rachael Lincoln and given by her to her daughter Emily Gilbert”. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt molded wood frame. SIGHT SIZE: 22-3/4” x 14”. CONDITION: Good, some toning. FEDERAL GRAIN PAINTED CORNER CUPBOARD. New England, early 19th Century. Painted overall with brown and yellow grain painting (probably late 19th century) with blue and other colors underneath. In two sections, the upper with molded cornice with acorn and scalloped frieze, arches glazed door below enclosed by conforming moldeing centering three block each with concentric turnings, opening to shelved interior. The lower section with a pair of paneled doors opening to a shelf on turned cone and flattened ball feet. FINE PAINT DECORATED DOCUMENT BOX. Early 19th Century lift lid box has what appears to be a second paint decoration done in 1828. The original blue is underneath and can be seen on the lid. The present decoration has diamonds and stepped square designs on the cover. The front has a wonderful scroll leaf decoration with fans at corners in mustard over a green paint. Flanking the escutcheon is “H H” with “1828” underneath. Original wire hinges and nailed construction. SIZE: 7-3/4” h x top size 16” x 9”. CONDITION: Very good with a nice crackled finish. Each drawer in nicely figured veneers and having a line and banded edge. The base with one long drawer over three drawers with nice molded edge shaped apron. Tall cabriole legs ending in pad feet. FINE MAHOGANY SHAPED TOP SHERATON CARD TABLE. Unusual deep curving side top with elliptical cut front. Each leaf in single board mahogany. The conforming skirt in mahogany veneers with bottom edge in darker band. The four reeded tapered round legs ending in a turned and tapered foot terminating with original capped caster feet. The back skirt board and leaf support are in curly maple. The family had two sides, one related to the Hooker family of Springfield, Massachusetts; the other with a Boston, Massachusetts background. Circa 1800-1810. FAMILY PROVENANCE: Sally Walley in 1794 married John Phillips, first mayor of Boston. She was from New York, to her daughter Sarah Hurd Phillips, Mrs. Frank Jenks after his death, Mrs. Alonzo Gray. From her daughter Mary Elwell Jenks, Mrs. Richard S. Storrs III. CARVED WOOD AND PAINT DECORATED AMERICAN EAGLE WALL PLAQUE ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE STAPF. George Stapf (1862-1958), Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Circa late 19th Century. The head and upper body facing upward left with open beak and spread wings. Surmounted by an unfurled American flag with applied and painted stars, and grasping a shield in its right talon and arrows in its left talon. The flag and shield with red, white and blue polychrome surface. REFERENCE: For a similar eagle see Sotheby’s Sale No. 8097, May 19th, 2005 Lot #140. SIZE: 30” l x 22-1/2” h. CONDITION: The piece appears to be in original paint and finish. Never has been restored in as found condition. There is a section of the top right wing, which is missing. Part of the flag staff and top staff ball is missing. The arrows have been affixed to the left of their original position. One arrow has slice chip and another is missing its end. There is paint chipping to the red stripes of the flag. Possibly missing a number of raised stars. A spectacular find in a mostly intact plaque. 9-27455 (20,000-30,000)

SMALL NANTUCKET PAINTED AND WOOD SAILOR WHIRLIGIG. Flat wood whirligig is a man with painted sailor outfit in black and white. His bevel back head has a metal and wood hat. SET OF FOUR RIBBON-BACK CHIPPENDALE CHAIRS. Set consists of two armchairs and two side chairs. Each chair with four pierced horizontal slats, square molded front legs, dovetailed H-stretcher and slightly curving back legs. Serpentine front seat rail. The armchairs have scroll type arms with curving arm supports having a very light beaded edge. Over-upholstered black leather seats, which is later upholstery. Chairs appear to be mahogany. 18th Century. Similar to chairs attributed to Connecticut. PROVENANCE: From a fine Brunswick, Maine Estate. SIZE: 36-3/4” h x 18” seat h x 21-1/2” across seat rail. CONDITION: One chair has horizontal slat, which has been broken. There is an extra broken slat, which may mean that one has been replaced. IMPORTANT AND RARE WISCASSET, MAINE MAHOGANY SECRETARY ATTRIBUTED TO JOSHUA DAMON. The two-part secretary has a top section fitted with two inlaid blind doors, which open to reveal eight cubby’s and one large compartment. The upper section with two glazed doors having molded edge mullion. The crest with curving form having central block inlaid panel with three brass urn finials. The frieze with a decorative light and dark intertwined inlay. The doors have a similar light and dark inlay band. The bottom section has a deep dovetailed fold over writing section, which has two lift top compartments and three drawers. Three graduated drawers below, each fitted with original oval bale brasses decorated in thistle design. The tapered square Mediterranean style foot on all four corners. ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) SHIP PORTRAIT OF THE “SOUTHAMPTON”. Oil on board ship portrait shows the three-mast black hulled ship in full sail sailing right to left in heavy sea. The waves are green and blue with white tips under a blue and cloud sky. Fourteen figures are seen on deck with the ships name emblazoned in gold on the bow. Signed lower right “Antonio Jacobsen 1918”. Housed in a good gilt molded wood replacement frame. SIZE: 12” x 20”. The US flag off the stern and various other identification flags on each mast. Twelve people are seen on deck. Title on left side “Famous Clipper Dreadnaught”. ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (American, 1850-1921) PORTRAIT OF THE STEAMSHIP JEFFERSON. Oil on board ship portrait shows a black hulled, white deck, single stack ship sailing right to left. The name emblazoned on the bow above pilot house and on the ship’s banner flag. A company flag flies with “O.D.” (Old Dominion Line). Signed lower right “A. Jacobsen 1914”. FINE PAINTED HALF HULL MODEL. The well carved ship’s hull painted in white and green is mounted on a walnut molded edge backboard. Appears to be first half of the 20th Century. OUTSTANDING CHINESE EXPORT DAVENPORT INLAID DESK BY THE “SHANGHAI CARPENTER”. Signed in oriental characters under the left pullout slide. The desk is in an oriental wood with fine graining. The slant lid having what appears to be its original tooled leather top, opens to reveal two drawers over simulated long drawer interior with open compartment. The left brass knob of the long drawer releases a square fitted drawer which comes out of side. A full slide comes out of each side and there are three graduated drawers in front. Each fitted with decorative recessed brass handles and ivory string inlay. The sides have similar inlay. Top desk section slides forward for easy writing and knee comfort. Molded base set on four squat feet ending in casters. A fine oriental copy of an English Davenport desk. SIZE: 34” h x 21” w x 21” d. CONDITION: Very good. UNSIGNED (Chinese School, 19th Century) “BARQUE MUSKOKA”. Fine oil on canvas ship portrait of the four-mast black hulled ship Muskoka. It shows the ship sailing left to right in wavy ocean with several other boats off bow and stern. Ship flies the British flag off the stern and other flags at the top of each mast. Housed in a good gilt wood replacement frame with name tag. An N R. Omell label is affixed to reverse indicating that this was No. 25 in their 1986 annual marine exhibition. SIZE: 24” x 32”. UNSIGNED (Chinese, 18th/19th Century) PAIR OF CHINA TRADE INTERIOR SCENES. Oil on canvas scenes show an interior room setting with people at table. Landscape can be seen outside of window. Very colorful and housed in period ebonized wood frames with gold liners. 1) Scene shows three men at red lacquer table with stools. Two chicks are seen in round pan while other children are playing. 2) Scene shows ten people at dinner table posed as if a family portrait. IMPORTANT AND RARE SCRIMSHAW IVORY TUSK CARVED BY JIM FREEMAN. Inscription on the tusk as follows: “Jim Freeman Head Krouman of H.M.S. Sybille Comdre Coillier 1827”. “Jim Freeman Head Krouman of H.M.S. Owen Glendower Sir Robt Mendes Comdre 1823”. Jim Freeman served on two British Men of War, the Owen Glendower, which he misspelled and the Sybille. A Krouman is an African from the coast of Liberia. The British public records office confirms Freeman serving on these ships at the time indicated and having captains of these ships on the dates given. There is a letter outlining the history of the two ships and this tusk and a letter from the Public record office dated 1970 is included. REFERENCE: Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artist’s by Stuart M. RARE AND IMPORTANT BLOWN GLASS MARINE LEACH BY LEOPOLD AND RUDOLPH BLASHKA. Leopold (1822-1895) and Rudolph (1857-1939) Blashka are from Dresden, Germany. They made highly detailed teaching models of ocean invertebrates. Their accomplishments also included a study collection of glass flowers. A collection is known at Harvard University and the Zoological Institute in Vienna. An original cardboard label with early script identifies it as “Pontobdella Muricata, L. No 330”. OUTSTANDING STAFFORDSHIRE PLATTER AND PLATE SET WITH NAUTICAL THEME. John Rogers and Son Longport, 1814-1836. Large 21-1/2” x 16-1/2” blue and white platter has a central rectangular nighttime scene of the defeat of the frigate Chesapeake by the Frigate H.M.S. Shannon. The border decorated with marine life including colorful shells. The six 10” plates have a square scene of a ship in wavy ocean and identical sea life border. THOMAS WILLIS (American, 1850-1925) SAILBOAT WITH LIGHTHOUSE. Silk and oil nautical scene shows a one mast sailboat with five sails flying American flag and triangular red, white and blue pennant. Five figures on deck with nice detail. The boat sails right to left on a green choppy sea and has a white lighthouse with two buildings on point of land at right. A pink, blue and white cloud sky. A fine example of this artists work. Signed lower right “T. Willis 1907”. Housed in what appears to be its original mahogany molded wood frame. SIGHT SIZE: 15-1/2” x 23-1/2”. CHINA TRADE NEEDLEWORK PORTRAIT OF THE SHIP “ONEIDA”. The fully rigged three-mast sailing vessel with sails up sails left to right. Ship has a black hull and sails through a blue silk background with dark blue waves. A banner above the ship gives name. An American flag flies off stern. The Oneida was lost at sea on June 24th, 1870. It was bound for Hong Kong and collided with a British mail steamer. Its home port was Yakohama, Japan. It was built in the New York Navy Yard in 1861 and fought in several Civil War battles including the Battle of Mobile Bay where it was the ship behind Admiral Farragat. It was assigned to the Asian fleet in 1870. Housed in a modern gesso decorated frame with gilt liner and velvet matte. SIGHT SIZE: Within matte. 14-1/2” x 18”. OUTSTANDING INLAID SHERATON MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD. Bowed center section having one long drawer over two cupboard doors flanked by two large side cupboard doors. All supported by six turned high legs. Each door and drawer front has fan type inlay at corners with light string inlay between. A band of light and dark inlay at edge of bottom skirt. Original brass rosette style hardware. Nice old finish and nice mahogany veneers. As nice of a Sheraton sideboard as we have seen in a long time. PROVENANCE: From a fine East Winthrop, Maine home. CARVED AND PAINTED SPREAD WING EAGLE WITH BANNER ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN HALEY BELLAMY. Late 19th Century carved and painted eagle has gold body and wings with painted shield in red, white and blue. FINE GILT CARVED WOOD EAGLE PLAQUE BY JOHN HALEY BELLAMY. Eagle with nice feather details holds curving arrow in talons. Appears to be in mahogany. Also on page 9, Heritage of Wood Carving, Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine 1975 exhibition catalog. item No 6 indicates that a “Partly carved mahogany eagle is probably the last eagle Bellamy worked on and never finished. The woman has a shawl around shoulders and wears a brownish/red dress. A lace bonnet is tied under her chin and she wears a golden pin on her collar. The man holds a book in his left hand and wears a formal black jacket with white shirt and bow tie. Unsigned. Housed in an old partial gilt black and red painted frame. SIZE: 10” x 12”. FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED WOOD ARTICULATING ORIOLE WHIRLIGIG BY RALPH BOUTILIER. Large carved wood oriole in colors of black, brown, yellow and orange has metal rod articulating carved and painted wood wings and a tail feather propeller made out of painted metal which when turned, moves the wings up and down. It comes on a custom cross base stand with the name of the artist. Ralph Boutilier is from Milton, Nova Scotia and did a number of these whirligigs in the last half of the 20th Century. INSCRIPTION: On back of canvas in beautiful script “The ship Azariah Sears Built 1885 Bucksport, Maine Likeness Painted for Capt. William Morrissey”. OUTSTANDING AND RARE TWO PART CORNER CUPBOARD. 18th Century. Appears to be in walnut. Top section with scroll pediment having carved flower rosettes. Central turned urn finial appears to be original. Under which there is a decorative carving. The glazed door in tombstone design having four pane fan above nine panes. Three shaped shelves, the bottom two with deep curving lobed front with plate rails and the bottom fitted with spoon slots. Top shelf with concave cutting and plate rail. All in a light blue color. Fine rattail hinges. The bottom with one large double raised panel door with one shelf behind, molded top and fine applied bracket base with drop fan carving. APPLIQUÉ AND EMBROIDERED 19TH CENTURY TABLE RUG. Rare table rug in rectangular form with triangular black stitched border edge. Interior set with thirty-seven patches, each embroidered with different bird, insect or animals. They are arranged in all directions so that the rug is visible from all sides. They include: Bear with fish, elephant, dog, kangaroo, duck with fish, two owls with moon, cow with calf, giraffe with palm tree, black cat, mouse, birds and much more. A great folk art piece. FABULOUS FOLK ART CRAZY QUILT WITH CATS. Circa 1880. This folk art quilt is made of velvet patches and having fur fabric work. The fifteen squares are bordered by a green outside border having red tufts. Six of the squares are made up of different color patches and have a fur worked cat with button eyes giving it a three-dimensional effect. The other squares show colorful flowers and shapes on a patchwork background. Comes with a Velcro wood frame for display. REFERENCE: Exhibited at the Folk Art Museum in the 1970’s. FABULOUS BLUE AND WHITE STAFFORDSHIRE SCENIC PLATTER AND STRAINER BY BAKER, BEVAN & IRWIN. This Swansea pottery commonly referred to as Glamorgan was in existence between 1813-1837. It was known for its transfer ware on opaque china. This is an outstanding example of their ware. Floral border encompasses a panoramic view of a man and woman on horseback next to man with scythe, cows in water, a mill, town and large castle. Unmarked. Circa 1820. FINE MAHOGANY AND GILT CHIPPENDALE MIRROR ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN ELLIOT OF PHILADELPHIA. The fretwork scroll carved frame has inner gilt carved edge in front of a beveled mirror plate. Side gilt carved leaf and flower design. The back frame work is butt jointed, not mortised. The open crest with side gilt leaf carving and central tall, carved phoenix bird on leaf perch. PAINT DECORATED SCHOHARIE VALLEY, N Y DOWER CHEST. The top having applied molded edge, interior lidded till. Replaced strap hinges, applied molded edge bracket base. The chest is in a blue paint with the front having the original paint decoration of a red and mustard colored double handled vase of red and mustard color flowers with leaves. The corners having a red and mustard colored eight-petal flower linked with a border of foliate vine. SIZE: 19-3/4” h x case 41-1/2” x 16-1/2”. Top size 43-1/4” x 17-1/4”. CONDITION: Paint loss to top. Front has old original alligatored paint finish, some other scraping. Piece missing from right side front bracket. Back leg is a replacement. VERY RARE EARLY PAINTED GAME BOARD. Board believed to be from the “Royal Goose” or “Snake” game. Square board with coiled painted snake with red arrow tongue. Snake in colors of black, brown and tan. Around the belly of the snake are 63 drilled holes. Atop the snake are various colored ducks with one at tollbooth, one next to dice, one next to doorway, another next to fireplace, one beside tunnel and one beside castle. The last is beside a skeleton holding a black arrow. There is a cream and black bordered circle that all of this fits in. Background color is a dark brown. SIZE: 16” x 15-1/2”. The twelve by twelve checkerboard has green and mustard painted squares flanked by two rectangular trays having a monogram “RM” with intertwining foliate decoration in gold to brown. The monograms are gold with salmon and red shadows. Applied molded frame in mahogany. Backside with a silhouette painting of two men playing the game titled “Le Coup Fatal”. IMPORTANT INLAID MAHOGANY TAMBOUR SECRETARY. Possibly Salem or Newburyport. Top section has two drawers over tambour slides and central door. Behind central door is one drawer and two cubbyholes. Six other cubbyholes and two doors are behind slides. Upper drawers have band inlay and double brass knobs. Central panel over door has oval inlaid panel. Door has diamond inlay pattern. Bottom section has fold over writing surface with edge inlay. Four graduated drawers with lion brasses. Each drawer with dark banded inlay outlined with string inlay. FINE CARVED MAHOGANY SHERATON SOFA. The mahogany frame has scroll back crest with bold horizontal carved reeding. The arms are well formed with melon type carved reeding and framed block panels. The four front legs in tapering form with vertical reeding and ring turnings ending in outstanding leaf decorated cupped caster feet. The back four legs with curving square legs ending in square cupped caster feet. Nicely reupholstered in a flower and blue stripe pattern on an ivory background. Two matching throw pillows and extra fabric accompanies sofa. PROVENANCE: Originally found in Falmouth, Maine. Possibly a Portland, Maine area sofa. CHIPPENDALE BALL AND CLAW FOOT PERIOD WING CHAIR. Probably New York. Stripped of its upholstery and showing multiple tack lines. Mahogany well carved and formed ball and claw front legs, outstretching mahogany back legs. Well formed wings and shaped crest. 18th Century. PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKET “THOMAS C. AMORY 1806”. Green bucket has large painting of Gabrielle blowing her horn. She has a red cape and is surrounded by a banner in a mustard light orange with writing at top “Thomas C. Amory” and at the base an intertwined scroll banner “Active 1806”. Signed on bottom “GDP” which possibly could be the artist. The top and bottom rim in brown with a black leather handle. Handle and rings intact. PROVENANCE: Believed to be a Peabody, Massachusetts bucket. SIZE: 12-1/2″ h to top of rim. CONDITION: There is some wide cracking to the paint surface through the center of the front picture. OUTSTANDING PAIR OF PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKETS “JOHNSON 1821”. Green body with red top rim and black handle supports a mustard color scrolled banner with “Johnson” in black. FINE PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKET “LEWIS BARNES NO 1 1789”. Outstanding paint decoration as follows: The front in black with burning tree in black oval with “No 1” surrounded by a top banner in shellacked white with red and blue border. The bottom of the oval “Federal F. S” (Federal Fire Society) with the date “1789” below. The bottom rim and top rim in red. The back side with alternating vertical striping in red, white and black. There are a total of fourteen stripes. This striping is typical of buckets found in the Portsmouth, NH area. PROVENANCE: Dianne Halperin Antiques, Wiscasset, Maine. SIZE: 12″ h. OUTSTANDING PAIR OF PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKETS “WM. DOWNING 1804”. One numbered “55” and the other is “56”. The black bucket has a red, pink and white scrolled leaf decorative banner with black lettering “Wm Downing” which frames the date and number. Pink upper and bottom rings. Black painted leather handles have newer leather reinforcements at rings. These buckets were found in Kennebunk, Maine and comes with family history indicating that they were given by Ida Elwell who lived on Brown St. in the Carrie Emmons house circa 1930-40 by James A. MacDonald. It is believed that Mrs. Elwell’s maiden name was Downing. SIZE: 12″ h and 12-12/2″ h to top of rims. CONDITION: Generally very good. With bright light an earlier paint can be seen with scrolled banner and date of “1799”. Rings are rectangular wrought pieces in buckle form. PROVENANCE: Found in Thomaston, Maine. A three-mast tall ship off right land flies American flag. Other boats are seen on horizon. A castle with flags is seen on left side. All under a pink and light blue sky. JAMES EMERY (American, 1819-1899) SHIPWRECK OFF LIGHTHOUSE. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a wrecked single stack steamer off a rocky shoal. A white lighthouse with building sits atop rocky point of land. A small rowboat is seen coming on shore with two men. Signed lower left “Jas. Emery Bucksport, ME”. A beautiful sunset sky with light shining over the lighthouse with yellow to blue sky and pink clouds. Housed in a fine antique gesso decorated gilt frame. Family history indicates that this is the wreck of the “City of Richmond”. Emery was a Maine painter and this may depict a wreck off one of Maine’s lighthouses. SIZE: 26” x 48”. LARGE ORIENTAL CARVED IVORY FIGURAL GROUP. The shaped pieced decorated ivory base sets into a wood footed stand, all holding a horse driven Rickshaw and two standing figures. The horse has rider atop, the Rickshaw with a man with fancy head ornament and kimono. The Rickshaw is decorated with lions and the pierced wheels have nice ornamentation. The Rickshaw back has dragon decoration. The figures are glued to the ivory base. PROVENANCE: From a Belgrade Lakes, Maine home. SIZE: Total height is 12-1/2” x 17” l x 8-1/2” d. WILLIAM CALLCOTT KNELL (British, 1830-1876) PAIR OF SHIPPING SCENES. Both large oil on canvas scenes are identically housed in gesso decorated period frames. 1) Scene shows five boats off a coastal city with large wharfs and buildings. The central ship has five men lowering a large net with barrel buoys. A rowboat with two men is seen attached to other end of nets. Three large vessels in full sail are seen elsewhere. Signed lower left “W C Knell”. There is an original partial penned label to back which indicates artist and title. 2) Scene shows six boats off coast line with windmill and town. People are seen walking on grassy shoreline which is reinforced with wood posts. A large fishing vessel with five men aboard is drawing up a net which has attached to a rowboat with four men, all in rough seas. Other boats are seen around in background. FREDERICK LEO HUNTER (American, 1858-1943) SHIP PORTRAIT OF “THE GOLDEN HIND”. Large oil on canvas seascape shows a galleon in full sail sailing right to left. Ships are seen off bow and stern and are members of the fleet. The Golden Hind was Sir Francis Drake’s ship which, in 1577 circumnavigated the world during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. CARVED AND PAINTED ANTIQUE CIGAR STORE INDIAN. The standing painted and carved Indian has long black hair, colorful dress and large feathered plume type headdress. A generous amount of weathered original paint still remains and mounted on a replaced square stepped base. 19th Century. PROVENANCE: Found in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1991. SIZE: Figure is 57” h. 19TH CENTURY CARVED AND PAINTED CIGAR STORE INDIAN. Standing in striding position holding cigars in one hand and large knife in other. Standing on a square block and wearing a colorful dress in red, yellow and gray. A large feathered head dress adorns the head. PROVENANCE: De-accessioned from the Denver Art Museum in 1995. SIZE: 78” h with base; base being 6” h. CONDITION: Repainted, some weathering and cracks throughout and some minor repairs. Generally in very good condition. LOT OF SIX CARVED AND PAINTED PUNCH AND JUDY CHARACTER PUPPETS. All puppets include a carved and painted head and hands. They all have costumes. She wears tight curled hair, a black dress with lace collar and cuffs. A large gold slide chain and two gold rings. At her neck is a large pink bow with rose decorated pin. Fine facial features. FINE CARVED LARGE AMERICAN EAGLE. Full bodied life size eagle with raised wings on a rock work base. REFERENCE: For similar eagle and base see item #1691, Sale #7085 Sotheby’s. OUTSTANDING INLAID DOUBLE SIDED GAME BOARD. Thick board is identical on both sides, each side having a hinged lid game piece storage area on the sides (there is only one storage but doors on each side). The interior with a twelve by twelve light and dark stained checkerboard. The double framed edge totally inlaid with light and dark diamond design. Included are 16 black and 30 red wood game pieces. FINE PAINTED DOUBLE SIDED CHECKERS/BACKGAMMON GAME BOARD. Side 1 – Red and gold painted squares having black borders. Eight by eight with a black painted wood molded edge. The outside tray in red with a molded wood frame. Side 2 – With standard backgammon board with black and gold outlined playing spots on a red field. PAINTED GAME BOARD WITH HISTORY. Black and white painted checkerboard. Back side has pasted old paper saying “This checkerboard was once the property of the Club who occupied this room. In the years 1860-1862. Known as the Ellsworth Associates. 15 of its members out of 16 enlisted in the Union Army. Presented by Comrade J. E. Trask”. PROVENANCE: From a Salem, Massachusetts home. SOLDIER HISTORY: James E. Trask resided in Salem, Massachusetts. He enlisted on 8/15/62 as a private. He was in the MA 50th Infantry and was a member of the GAR Post #34 in Salem, MA and also Post #89 in Beverly, MA. He dies 5/12/04. The Ellsworth Association was a group formed after the death of Col. E. Elmer Ellsworth. Primarily a New York group, it had satellite groups throughout the north. SIZE: 15-1/2” x 15-1/2”. WILLIAM SHARP (American, 1803-1875) IMPORTANT AND RARE SET OF SIX LITHOGRAPHS “VICTORIA REGIA OR THE GREAT WATER LILY OF AMERICA”. John Fisk Allen, Boston, Dutton and Wentworth, 1854. Set of six chromolithographs on wove paper. Including Young Plants, Frontispiece; Opening Flower; Under Side of Lea;, Intermediate Stages of Bloom; View of the Form of the Flower Mentioned on the Thirteenth Page; and Complete Bloom. Housed as follows: Four in matching ornate replacement frames with an ogee type molding. Two with modern cove type frame. All have identical mattes with multiple watercolor highlighted borders. Accompanying lot is the original portfolio book with text. A fascinating group of colorful prints drawn from specimens grown at Salem, Massachusetts by John Fisk Allen. SIGHT SIZE: Approximately 17” x 23”. CONDITION: The colors are very fresh and the prints have full margins. Scattered pale foxing, very pale staining, some soft creasing, small nicks and tears (some repaired) and occasional rubbed spots in the margins. Young Plants, Frontispiece with a tiny filled hole in the image, Intermediate Stages of Bloom with a soft crease in the left margin, old binging holes in the bottom margins, otherwise generally is very good to excellent condition. The book is as is and in poor condition. All pieces prior to framing were conserved by Margaret Moreland of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1988. Individual conservation reports are available and can be sent to perspective buyers. Due to these reports, which are comprehensive, we did not examine them out of the frames. WONDERFUL EARLY 19TH CENTURY TAVERN SIGN DEPICTING GEORGE WASHINGTON ON HORSE. This outstanding early 19th Century tavern sign for the Scribner House was originally found in Massachusetts. The pine three board self framed sign depicts George Washington in his General uniform atop a great white stallion all within a landscape of trees. This is the central images in the middle of the sign with “Scribner” above and “House” below in yellow and red letters. On the top left and right of the side panel are gold stars. The reverse of the sign also with “Scribner House” depicts a vignette in the center with a very early sulky horse and a driver. The sign retains what appears to be original old rusted forged hardware on either side. SIZE: Approximately 38” sq. CONDITION: The paint on the side with George Washington is worn but still quite strong. The paint on the reverse side is much worn. Overall the sign has a great appearance. NICELY CARVED AMERICAN EAGLE WALL PLAQUE. This early 20th century plaque, reminiscent of the works of Pennsylvania artist George Stapf depicts spread-winged eagle with detailed feathering and clasping a polychromed red, white & blue shield with carved stars and stripes. With draped banners and crossed arrows beneath. The eagle painted in gold. SIZE: 24”w. WONDERFUL EARLY 19TH CENTURY CREWELWORK FOOTSTOOL. This footstool itself paint-decorated and of the Empire period. The top covered with a linen like material with applied 18th century crewelwork depicting birds with cherries and large multi-colored blossoming flowers and leaves. The stool of New England origin and believed to have been New England made. The crewelwork, however, identical to similar examples done in the 18th century in Pennsylvania. See Margaret B. Schiffer, “Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania”, frontice cover, which depicts a crewelwork picture with nearly identical birds and flowers (the referenced example in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum). The base is heavy paint decorated with shades of gray and brown, fanciful decoration. The feet simple round turnings affixed by square nails. SIZE: 14”w x 9-1/2”d x 8-1/2”h. CONDITION: Paint in generally good condition with some small imperfections. The wonderful crewelwork decorated top with various imperfections including small portions of missing needlework (the birds originally had three cherries in their mouth), also some imperfections on the birds and flowers. The fabric covering soiled with age but obviously at one time a cherished and cared-for item, as the crewelwork is over 200 years old. MAGNIFICENT ANTIQUE SCANDINAVIAN HOODED DECORATED DOME BOX. This outstanding example features bold polychrome decoration on all four sides and the rounded lid. The colorful decoration on a beautiful dark salmon red background depicts sprays of yellow, white, black, green and blue flower and berry-type decorations. The lid, cut in a scalloped manner on the sides and the box having an applied scalloped footed base. The lid opens to reveal an equally decorated interior with white background and beautiful polychrome flowers. The interior also fitted with a miniature ditty box on the side, also decorated. SIZE: 10-1/4”w x 5-1/2”d x 6-1/2”h. CONDITION: Generally excellent overall and throughout. A tight hairline crack visible only on the top but generally excellent throughout with vivid, bold and beautiful colorful decorations. An outstanding example. (1,000-2,000)

OUTSTANDING SCANDINAVIAN DECORATED DOME MINIATURE BOX. The box with a deep salmon-red background overall and having a bold spray of polychrome flowers and leaves on the top lid in shades of blue, green, yellow, white and black. The frontice with a similar spray of flowers. The decoration on both the lid and the frontice framed in a nice robin’s egg blue border. The ends each decorated with a small spray. The back undecorated but with the same robin’s egg blue paint. The lid opens to reveal an interior with a small fitted compartment. SIZE: 9-1/2”w x 5-1/2”d x 6-1/4”h. CONDITION: Salmon-red slightly faded on the domed lid; otherwise decoration is very much intact and extremely bold and graphic. (850-1,250)

WONDERFUL EARLY ANTIQUE MUSTARD DECORATED DOME BOX. This early 19th Century box retains the original decoration with bright mustard coloration on ends, frontice and top. The top with an oval vignette of colorful red, blue, white and green flowers and the border of the oval vignette with rosewood-type graining. Each of the end panels of the box are bright mustard yellow with a spray of flowers and the frontice of the box with an escutcheon of mustard paint and a sprig of flowers and the outside of the escutcheon with identical rosewood decoration as the top. Retains original wire hinges and simple wire clasp. SIZE: 9-1/4”w x 5-1/4”d x 4-1/4”h. CONDITION: Small tight 2” crack in top. Paint generally very strong overall on this wonderful diminutive box. DESIRABLE LARGE COUNTRY WORK TABLE OR BAKER’S TABLE. This 19th century turn leg work table features a large wide pine top with cleats on the end. It had cleats on either end fitted with double pins; the tabletop can thus be removed from the base by simply pulling the wood pins. The base, an old brownish-green paint, the top with a sponge mottled paint similar to base (appears to be an old surface, but may or may not be the original one). The mortised base with bold Sheraton turned legs. A great size! SIZE: 8’2-1/2”l x 2’3-1/2”w x 31”h. EXQUISITE RARE 18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY PORCELAIN PATCH BOX. This magnificent porcelain box, shaped in the form of a Georgian maiden wearing a mask. Her hair coiffeured in a high elaborate manner with feathers and ribbons. Her face with delicate highlights including flesh tones. The back of the box of fire gilt. Engraved metal lid, which opens to the interior. SIZE: 3”l. CONDITION: Some tight hairline cracks and a couple of tiny imperfections, generally in the elaborate hair. (750-1,250)

CHOICE 18TH CENTURY ENAMEL ETUI. This magnificent enameled Etui with oval vignettes on the lid and base with fire gilt metal mounts. The frontice depicting early scene of gentleman and lady fishing. The reverse of enamel vignette depicting a village with a cathedral in the background, the top decorated with vignettes of flowers. PERIOD MAHOGANY PEMBROKE SHERATON STAND. This small turn leg drop leaf table with full-length drawer having shaped drop leaves and bead decorated trimmed apron on the drawer end, the reverse end with inlaid beading. SCARCE STATE OF MAINE SLANT-LID SECRETARY. This three-drawer mahogany veneered country early 19th century secretary, with flat panel sides, three bead molded drawers and nice bold turned Sheraton legs is fitted with a removable top. The top is fitted with two mahogany veneered doors, which open to reveal five-drawers and a five-compartment interior. The three full drawers in the base are fitted with replacement Victorian brasses. SIZE: 42”w x 54-1/2”h x 19-1/2”d. MAGNIFICENT DETAILED CARVED AND PAINTED PAIR OF TEAL BY T. J. HOOKER. This magnificent pair of Teal with glass-set eyes have carved wing and tail featheration and exquisite detailed painted decorations overall. The underside branded by Hooker as well as signed by him and dated, “NOVEMBER 1972”. Hooker is a very well known decoy carver and copies of his original carvings such as this have been molded and for a long time, sold through the North American organization, “Ducks Unlimited”. ANTIQUE GUS WILSON SCOTTER DECOY. Gus Wilson is probably the most famous and most popular of any of the Maine decoy carvers. An old South Portland lighthouse keeper who used to carved decoys throughout the day while tending his lighthouse. This small Scotter with carved-relief wings and detailed tail carving having Wilson’s distinguishing carved eyes. The head affixed to the body on a spike that allowed it to easily swivel from side to side when rocking in the waves. Painted black overall with the characteristic yellow swatch on the beak. FABULOUS DIMINUTIVE ANTIQUE HOBBY HORSE. This beautiful folky hobbyhorse is an outstanding example. It is covered all over with brown wool or felt to simulate hide has a horse-hair tail and mane and retains its original saddle and blanket and simulated harness work. FINE FEDERAL MAHOGANY VANITY. Delicate mahogany vanity, the top with string inlaid circles representing placement for washbowl, etc. The front fitted with a large plum pudding mahogany single panel door, which opens to reveal a shelved compartment. Below a full length dovetailed drawer, the body with flat paneled sides and back. All supported on four delicate federal Sheraton legs terminating in cast brass ball feet. The top is hinged on both sides where originally there were two separate leaves, which closed over the top. When opened, they expanded the working area of the vanity top now missing. FINE CLASSICAL MAHOGANY AND GILT SEWING STAND. Highly figured rich mahogany veneers and gilt trim as well as gilt and ebonized legs and supports. The lift hinged lid has inset oval mirror and opens to reveal a segmented compartmentalized interior having four covers with ivory pulls. The frieze supports a long drawer and wooden sewing bag. FINE FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY LADIES DESK. Circa 1800. In two parts with cove molded top above a frieze outlined with string inlay, which is a secret drawer. Two doors, having column inlay at ends and middle divider, open to reveal four drawers and six cubby holes. Fold over writing surface with replaced green felt. Four graduated applied molded edge drawers having original oval brasses. Carved skirt with line inlay above supported by flaring French feet joined to shaped sides. RARE 19TH CENTURY MASONIC SILVER JEWEL. The shaped shield like silver medallion has on one side written “Lodge E. Jones No. 811”. It is engraved with a fireman in fancy dress, a knights helmet, a ladder with a rooster, skull and crossbones among other motifs. The other side “Amor Honor et Justitia” and underneath “Bangor”. The Masonic all seeing eye above a compass with pillars holding up the banner. A number scale from 1 to 10 is seen on bottom. A hanging loop is attached at top. SIZE: Without loop is 2-1/2” x 2-1/4”. Above top banner is “No 2”. Original leather handle is present. Impressed mark on each side of seam is not decipherable. SIZE: 13” h without handle. PAINTED LEATHER FIRE BUCKET “COLUMBIAN EAGLE FIRE SOCIETY”. The green painted body decorated with a large spread winged eagle having a red, white and blue shield holding a white banner in beak which says “Columbian Eagle Fire Society”. A bottom white banner says “George Darracott”. Date at bottom only partially can be seen but appears to be “1807”. Above top banner in mustard is “No 2”. Red top rim retains one of its metal rings and leather loop. Handle missing. PROVENANCE: Found in Portland, Maine. SIZE: 13″ h to top of rim. WATERGATE COMMITTEE SIGNED DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. Fascinating item of Watergate memorabilia, which comprises a bicentennial postal copy first day issue of the Declaration of Independence. Signed by the members of the Watergate Committee postal dated October 20, 1972. The antique style document signed in black marker on the edges by six committee members as follows: Sam Ervin; Ed Gurney; Daniel Inouye; Joseph Montoya; Herman Talmadge, Lowell Weicker’s signature. Also Howard Baker, the Committee’s attorney. Housed in a modern decorated molded wood frame behind glass. This is the only copy known to exist. PROVENANCE: Our consignor went to the post office for the First Day Issue and brought the document to Senator Inouye’s office in which he was a constituent of. He requested the signatures and a few months later he received it back. DOCUMENT SIZE: 15-3/4” x 13-3/4”. OVERALL SIZE: 20-1/2” x 18-1/2”. Framed souvenir copy of the Pardon granted to Richard Nixon by Gerald Ford on official White House memorandum stationary. An interesting memento of the controversial conclusion of the Watergate Episode, which resulted in the only Presidential Resignation in history. It is signed in black pen “G. Ford”. FINE 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH BURL WALNUT DESK. The slant front desk has four graduated drawers with applied lip molding. Old bale brass hardware. All resting on a nicely carved bracket base. The interior fitted with central carved door, six small drawers and six cubby holes. A replaced green felt interior. The desk front in complete burl veneers is quite attractive with a nice patina. FINE EARLY 18TH CENTURY ENGLISH BRACKET CLOCK BY GEORGE ETHERINGTON. The ebonized case has brass swing handle on top, glass door with brass wire top corners and identical door in back. The brass dial with silver plated chapter ring and pendulum indicator. An oval silver plaque signed “Etherington, London”. The corners of the dome top dial plate have gilt pierced spandrels and are surmounted by a strike/silent dial. Fusee strike and time. The back plate heavily engraved with bird, basket of flowers and foliate scrolls. Repair marks found on movement indicate years of 1822-1882. George Etherington was admitted to the Clock Makers Company in 1684 and became a Master in 1709. Key and pendulum present. SIZE: 20-1/2” to top of handle. 11-1/4” w x 8-1/2” d. CONDITION: Very good. MAHOGANY TALL CLOCK BY SELL & MORALL, LIVERPOOL. The fine painted dial has house in landscape vignettes at each corner. Two depict church and graveyard, the other two show a house with woman outside. Inner minute and day dial, brass works with strike bell. The case in nice mahogany veneers having shaped small waist door flanked by three quarter spiral and turned posts. The hood with swan neck pediment, brass finials and spiral carved columns. Back of dial indicates restored in 1972 by D. Briggs, which indicates some repainting. OUTSTANDING AND RARE STERLING COVERED SOUP TUREEN BY PAUL STORR. Oval two handled tureen stands on an oval pedestal base. Dome stepped cover surmounted by a fancy handle. Cover and base having a fancy family crest. Cover hallmarked “PS”. Pedestal base edge marked with “PS” and date mark 1808. A second hallmark can be seen on side of pedestal which we can not discern but appears to be a crown over a _S with a letter stamp and woman looking left. Handles are attached with full lion head masks and have shell and scroll decorations. A gadrooned edge with ribbed bands. One is a blonde haired woman seated on a red cushion with colorful throws beside her. Another woman is seated on cloth adjusting a tabletop oval mirror. Gold colored curtains surround a gray light colored background. Signed lower left “W. Russell Flint”. Housed in a fine gilt carved wood frame with linen matte. Archival frame which has a copy of the writing on the back with title and artist name. Also “Exhibited at RA 1939” (Exhibited at the Royal Academy in London). Large unsigned oil on canvas scene shows a group of women and children standing on and next to a large tall blue marking post with stone foundation. One woman holds small child with white outfit in arms. Behind the scene is a Maine type fisherman with fishing cap. Stucco buildings are seen in background with red roofs and one woman is standing tall next to blue post with three-draw extended telescope in hand. Housed in a magnificent carved wood leaf decorated gilt frame. The scene has many features reminiscent of Winslow Homer’s work. A fine dramatic scene of life at sea. SIZE: 54” x 39-1/2”. REGENCY CARVED MAHOGANY DROP LEAF SOFA TABLE. Second quarter of the 19th Century. Rectangular reeded edge top with drop leaves having rounded corners. Above a frieze having two drawers on one side and two faux drawers on the other. Each drawer fitted with two brass knobs having lion faces. All supported by two out sweeping reeded top legs with brass cup castor feet on each side. At the end of the frieze and bottom sections of leg post are reeded panels outlined with ebony inlay. ENGLISH COURT CUPBOARD. Outstanding two-part carved Elizabethan style English Court cupboard. This outstanding Court cupboard has bottom section fitted by one large carved door with shamrock carving. Intricate scroll and leaf carved side panels with spiral carved corner columns. A fine carved wood bracket base, sides with inset double panels. The door opens to reveal a single shaped shelf. The top section fitted with two doors having arched central mirrors with intricately carved frame. The side columns and central divider have carvings of Elizabethan style man. ELIZABETHAN CARVED DRAW TOP TABLE. Paneled top has side draw leaves. Carved molded frieze supported by four large turned hub and block legs with a central bulbous turned support. Resting on a molded stepped base structure. Wonderful patina. 17th/18th Century. Appears to be in walnut or oak. A very nice size being very functional. ATTRIBUTED TO FRANZ FRANCKEN, THE YOUNGER (Flemish, 1581-1642) CHRIST WITH THE MONEY CHANGERS IN THE TEMPLE. Oil on wood panel scene shows Christ next to a man with large hat with crown and beard. He points to a side alter with gold coins and bag. A number of other well dressed gentleman are seen behind him in a fancy interior setting. An arched open window looks out to castle and landscape. A monkey is seen in right corner, a small boy in red outfit and dagger in left. Housed in a good stained and gilt molded wood frame. Back of the panel has two 1-1/2” red wax seals. PROVENANCE: Gittelson Gallery 1950; Guttman Gallery frame. Sold by James D. Julia, Inc. August 3rd, 1995 from the collection of Joseph & Hazel Marcus. A three page typed description which was compiled by the Marcus’s accompanies painting. SIZE: 18-1/2” x 16-3/4”. CONDITION: There are three butterfly repairs to back of wood panel. UNSIGNED (European, 18th Century) OLD MASTER OF FROLICKING CHERUBS. Oil on canvas scene shows three cherubs, one blowing a long horn which has large red material attached with bows. The other two cherubs hold pink and white flowers in hands. Housed in a wide gilt molded wood frame which is old but not of the period. SIZE: 27” x 41-1/2”. OUTSTANDING FLEMISH STYLE CARVED AND PAINTED CABINET ON STAND. This ornate piece of furniture has a central two door cabinet which opens to reveal a painted interior set with shaped door and seven drawers all lavishly painted with colorful motifs. Mounted atop an open front stand having four boldly carved spiral columns with a bottom molded tier supported by four suppressed ball feet. The open area has molded panel back and drop winged cherub carving. The cabinet doors have similar columns beside, in front of and in back. The top section has a shelf with complex crest having central painted panel flanked by spiral columns and having side carved dolphin fish. Above which is a carved panel “1658”. ANTOINE GARCIA MENCIA (Italian, 19th Century) MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a pretty young girl dressed in a white fur lined coat having angel wings. She holds three colorful dolls and stands in front of St. Nicholas wearing a white robe with white hood adorned with mistletoe. The Santa figure has a white beard and holds a sack over shoulder and hand on a Christmas tree adorned with small candles. They are walking away from a large European style home which have lights in the windows, all under a dark nighttime sky. Signed lower left “A. Garcia Mencia”. Housed in a modern gilt wood frame. BOOK: FABULOUS LEATHER BOUND SCRAPBOOK OF POEMS AND WATERCOLORS. Presentation book is presented on first page to J. Easten in a colorful watercolor flower wreath. There is a pencil sketch of the family crest with a crown and flags. The volume is a compilation of her favorite poems, each written out in script in a very clean hand. Each poem is presented with a pencil drawing, a watercolor or a black and white engraving. The watercolors are quite exquisite with detailed landscapes, flowers, people, etc. Drawings are equally as good. There are 432 hand numbered pages with the end pages being a reference to the 61 plates and subjects. A truly wonderful volume. Housed in a red gold decorated binding in slip case. INTERESTING AND RARE CAST IRON CLOCK DESIGNED BY BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. Referred to as a three-wheel clock. We believe this example to be a 19th Century clock made from Franklin’s designs. The cast iron wall clock is mounted to a conforming edge molded wood back. The clock constructed of heavy cast iron and painted predominately yellow and green over an earlier blue paint. The back plate has a lyre form with dog heads at top flanking a top finial of rising sun and crescent mood. Bottom with a drop acorn finial. Steel movement has three inner wheels and carries a long cast iron pendulum, which is round with a butterfly in center. The one weight is cast iron with decorative shape. Cast iron pulley in rosette form has replaced chord. Round cast iron face is quite decorative with pierced work painted in ivory, yellow and green. SIZE: Clock without backboard is 22” h. Dial is 11-1/4” dia. CONDITION: Repainted. There is a copper added shaft for hands, two hands are present but it is unknown if they are original. Unknown working order. 9-28078 (1,000-1,500)

A smaller boat is seen of stern flying ships pennant “Robin”. The bottom painted legend states “Brig Turk W. H. Chase Portland”. The ship is seen with a colorful figure head, seven figures aboard and a very interesting background of a coastal village scene with shipyards, houses and hills in the background. Back top crest with writing which appears to say “Cleveland” which may correspond to a Charleston, Massachusetts joiner that worked in the early 1700’s. A well defined winged structure with rolled arms, nicely carved front legs with leaf and scroll design. SIZE: 42” h x 34-1/2” across arms x 11” to top of seat rail. OUTSTANDING BOUND VOLUME OF NAUTICAL CHARTS. This antique, large book has a sail cloth covering which is stitched to stay. The first chart has the name “Josiah Sturgis, Canton 1828”. The charts in this book were published by James Horsburgh. The charts indicate that they were an accompaniment to “The Book of Directions for Navigating To, From, and In the East Indies” and mentions the United East India Co. There are 26 charts all in black and white and all dated in the early 1800’s. Found in the book are seven documents relating to the Port of Salem, MA and includes one on the Schooner Atlantic. FINE FOLK ART SIDEWHEELER SHIP MODEL OF THE “MASSACHUSETTS”. The green and white hulled model has three decks painted in white with light green trim. Double smoke stack with red wheels and nicely detailed features. On one side of the wheel house is a decorative seal similar to Massachusetts. The Massachusetts was part of the Providence & Stonington Steamship Company and ran between New York and Boston. Other steamers included the Connecticut and Rhode Island. SIZE: 20” h x 58” l x 17” w. The legend indicates it is from the Providence and Stonington Steamship Company and ran between New York and Boston via Providence. THEODORE ROOSEVELT SIGNED LETTER AND APPROXIMATELY FORTY NOVELS. The letter on “Outlook” letterhead, dated 8.29.11. “Dear Fred, I am more than pleased to be in my own home! Nevertheless I know well just the kind of enjoyment you are having. Give my warm regard to Mrs. Stimson”. One page, 12mo on Outlook letterhead in fine condition with four corrections in Roosevelt’s hand. Accompanied by approximately forty titled (plus some in duplicate) of Stimson’s novels, biographies, children’s books, poetry, dramas, musical lyrics, off prints, scholarly treatises and law books (some of which remain in print). Stimson, a true polymath, was elevated to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1898. His papers are achieved at the Houghton Library and other scholarly repositories which contain his correspondence with Edith Wharton and James and others. This collection is notable for its many signed copies, two finely bound manuscripts, printer’s copies, copies with the author’s hand written revisions, ornate publisher’s bindings and the like. There are numerous items of correspondence from academics, financers, publishers, political figures and others. A most desirable collection. Stimson (1855-1943) was Harvard professor of comparative legislation, Wilson’s ambassador to Argentina (1914-1921, co-founder of the “Harvard Lampoon” and the author of notable works of both fiction and law. Roosevelt writes “assuming” Stimson was misquoted in the Boston Record Herald in his assertion the Roosevelt (“or his agent”) had inappropriately contacted “a certain other Judge-a higher Judge-was approached…and asked whether he would affirm this decision if it were appealed and cam before his court…”. Folio sheet folded to one page, 8vo, in fine condition with the original Whit House envelope also headed (in blue) “Personal”. Evans 1_37”. This bucket we believe is either repainted or used as a presentation in 1937. Handle and rings attached. Found in the bucket is a tool purportedly used on a fire engine. ANTIQUE DOWER CHEST WITH ORNATE PENNSYLVANIA-STYLE DECORATION. This early 19th century pine dower chest, fitted with a lidded compartment on the interior. The outer surface decorated with an overall sponge decoration and having free-hand painted panels on front, top and sides. The panels each with urns of ornate and elaborate flowers. The base with applied feet and the lid fitted with a lock mechanism (key and lock plate included inside). The decoration exhibits considerable age but may not be the original decoration. SIZE: 46”w x 19”d x 24”h. CONDITION: General wear and overall scuffs and abrasions dispersed over the surface of the chest. 18TH CENTURY BOW BACK WINDSOR CHAIR IN OLD DARK GREEN PAINT. Nine spindle hoop-back Windsor chair with shaped and formed seat having nice bulbous turned splayed base in an old (but probably not original) dark green paint finish. SIZE: 34”h x 16-1/2”w (to top of back), 18”h (to top of seat). CONDITION: Hoop back split at very top with an old patch on one of the lower cross stretchers. One leg lengthened by an inch. CONTINENTAL 18TH CENTURY TWO PART CARVED WALNUT CUPBOARD. In two sections. The smaller top section has a central locked door with key flanked by two slides which open to reveal a shelf interior. Each having vine carving and half fluted columns. The central door with panel of tall basket with roses. The iron decorative pulls and hardware are very nice. The bottom main section has two side by side drawers with original locks and key present. Each fitted with two decorative iron bale handles. Under which are two large carved doors each with central raised panel of classical urn with flowers framed by a nice molding. Behind which are two shelves. All raised on two French style carved legs and block back legs. Sides with three raised panels. A fabulous piece of carved furniture with great patina. SIZE: 59” h x 25” d x 55-1/2” at widest. EARLY CONTINENTAL INLAID TABLE CABINET. Rectangular cabinet, probably set on stand at one time. Fall front has large original lock and key, decorative escutcheon plate and side locks. The front has light and dark vine inlay with central shield. Opens to reveal three doors with each having three faux drawer front. Each having inlay and ripple molding decoration. ENGLISH TILT TOP MAHOGANY CARVED TEA TABLE. The pie crust carved top has six ovals separated by a pierce carved Prince of Wales plume. Supported by a carved urn form post with plume decoration. OUTSTANDING ANTIQUE CARVED AND PAINTED CAROUSEL HORSE ATTRIBUTED TO FREDERICK HEYN. The outside row horse has old paint surface in white with brown saddle having blue and gold dressing. Rhinestone decorated bridle and older paint layers beneath existing old paint. Large carved tail rests on right back leg. The right flowing mane is well carved, the head is down with horizontal carved ears. Front left leg is bent up with other down. Nicely carved saddle. VICTORIAN DAPPLE ROCKING HORSE. The large rockers in lime green paint holds a large horse with black and cream colored paint having spots. Original leather and cloth attached saddle. She holds a young infant who stands on lap and wears a blue sash at waist holding golden baby rattle. She wears a suite of garnet jewelry including a necklace, earring and hair piece. Housed in a fine carved wood gilt frame which possibly could be the work of Boston’s carver John Welch (1711-1789). Painting circa 1760 and probably shows a lady of British nobility. MAHOGANY GEORGE II SERPENTINE FRONT CARD TABLE. The fold over shaped top with replaced green felt over a serpentine front mahogany veneer frieze supported by three fixed legs and one swing leg. The front legs are chamfer carved on three sides. The back legs only on outside. The fold over top surface has outside inlaid band and central oval with decorative shell, which is a later addition. Several elegantly dressed women and men are beside. A large group of people are seen in background holding flags. The scene is framed by a canopy of flowering trees. Signed lower left “C. Exceptional Oriental fire screen has pierced and carved wooden frame holding an unbelievably delicate silk needlework depicting a group of six shrimp embroidered onto an extremely fine and thin silk background in light blue color. When first viewed the screen looks like it has been painted, but when viewed closely it reveals the extremely fine silk needlework. The panel rests in a matching pierced and carved wooden frame. Both are housed in identical gilt replacement wood frames which are signed “J. Golding Carver Guilder and Frame Maker, Springfield”. REFERENCE: The consignor, in July of 1992, showed the portraits to Helen Kellogg who made the attribution and these were thought to be of the Nichols Family of Enfield, New Hampshire, Circa 1836-38. UNSIGNED (American, 20th Century) TROMPE L’OEIL DOG IN DOGHOUSE. Unframed oil on board shows a white and black dog peering out of his red doghouse. OUTSTANDING CARVED WOOD AND PAINTED FOX HUNT FIGURES. The set consists of: Five horses with detachable riders. Three are brown horses, one is black and one is light gray. Three male riders wear red and white outfits, one male in black and white. The last shows a woman in black sidesaddle. The gray horse is jumping over hedge, which is present. There are ten dogs in white, brown and black coloring in running poses and there is one fox. SIZES: Horses are 8-1/2” l. Dogs are 3-1/2” l. Fox is 3” l. CARVED WOOD AND PAINTED SEATED CAT. The Pennsylvania carving out of one piece of wood shows a seated cat with tail curved in front and a real folk art look. FOUR MAN RAILROAD HAND CART WHIRLIGIG. From the Gandy Dancer Soo Line yard in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Whirligig shows a rectangular cart set on black railroad tracks. Two painted wood jointed figures on each side pump the cart as the wind turns the front blade. A painted orange fin in the back and a slatted painted red front propeller. SIZE: 32” l x 22” h. PAINTED COPPER FLAG WEATHERVANE. The mid-20th Century weathervane shows the American flag in wavy form having thirteen stars cutout on the blue field. Seven red stripes with six white stripes. SHEET STEEL SILHOUETTE CENTAUR WEATHERVANE. Classical depiction of the half man/half horse figure shooting an arrow with nicely shaped bow. The tail and mane in nice scroll work with a wonderful cutout wave scroll type rod. SIZE: 28-1/2” h x 35-1/2” l. CONDITION: Some pitting to rod and waves. Oil on canvas colorful scene shows a man with blue coat and yellow pack basket and umbrella standing in front of a stone stairway leading to a large house or tavern. A woman is atop stairs and appears to be carrying on a conversation. The buildings continue alongside a dirt road having a man with pull cart and boy walking. Another house is at end of lane with white mountain peaks scene behind trees. Signed lower right “S. Carlsen”. The back stretchers have four labels, one by a restorer in 1953. Light oil on board surrealistic scene shows a recumbent lion with large belly amongst tall grass with a small group of mushrooms and nuts which have been selectively eaten. Watercolor and pencil illustrations as follows: 1) Shows a colored frog with sword tipping his purple hat to a rat resting on a cane. The graphite backdrop has large house on hill with post with arrows “To Mousehall” and “To Frogmoor”. A caption underneath reads “Off he set with his opera hat and on the road he met with a rat”. Signed B. T. 1833. 2) Shows the frog with purple hat being chased by a woman frog with red cape and two walking sticks. The backdrop is a marshy area with hill beyond. INTERESTING TWO PART ENGLISH QUEEN ANNE CAMPAIGN CHEST. Top section having two over one drawer, bottom section having two drawers. The slightly overhanging top has molded edge with matched burl veneers. The drawer fronts have band interior inlay against burl veneers. Period bale brasses and matching escutcheon plates. Applied bracket base with carved shaped skirt. Mid 18th Century. The chest has been split halfway and fits over the second drawer. PROVENANCE: From a Salem, Massachusetts home.
