Chicago with brass and silvered brass dial marked “Tiffany & Co.” Elaborate multi-chimed movement marked by “J.J. Elliot Co. LTD of London”. Quartered oak case is extensively carved, the bonnet having grotesque mask carved crest with 3 dimensional bagpiper flanking dial. Center door having relief carved mask and shell elements flanked by carved columns topped by relief carved cherub heads. Lower panel having high relief carved tavern scene of three figures gambling at a round table. Similar case models were being offered by Tobey Furniture Co. in 1900. Five coiled gongs and 8 concentric bells (One octave) offer selection for chimes and strike. Movement is marked on back plate “J.J. Elliot Company LTD 5 Percival Street, London, England S/N 3065”. JJ Elliot was a clock craftsmen of the late 19th century. He was a great innovator, interested in creating high quality clocks that were interesting to listen to. In 1865 JJ Elliott began his clock making apprenticeship with “Bateman” of Smithfield, London. By 1882, Elliott was established as a “manufacturer of fine quality clocks”. In 1909 Elliot merged with Grimshaw Baxter. Silvered metal and brass dial having moon phases in upper lunette. In upper left and right corners are small inset dials for the management of the chime mechanism. Silvered dial marked Tiffany & Co. (retailer). “Tobey Furniture Co. of Chicago” was founded in 1856 and was a leader in the marketplace for handmade carved furniture. In 1905 “Toby Furniture Co. of Chicago” opened a showroom in New York on West 32nd street, near 5th Avenue. This offered “Tobey Handmade Furniture” a market on the east coast. Having this new location probably is responsible for the collaboration between Tobey Furniture Co. and Tiffany & Co.
