LAURA WOODWARD (American, 1834-1926) BEACH WITH CRASHING WAVES. Oil on canvas Housed in its original gesso decorated gilt frame with small losses Signed lower left “Laura Woodward” While Laura Woodward is currently thought of as one of Florida’s most important women artists of the 19th century, her ties to the northeast are significant. Born in New York State, Woodward early on championed the East coast landscape, with painting expeditions taking her to the Adirondacks, the Catskills and along the Massachusetts and Maine coastlines. Very well thought of and reviewed, she was a member of the Hudson River and White Mountain Schools, and exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others. Beginning in the 1880’s Woodward would spend the winters in Saint Augustine, Florida, and by 1889 she joined Martin Johnson Heade and other artists at Flagler’s Ponce de Leon Hotel. Looking for more exotic flora and fauna, Woodward ultimately settled in Palm Beach, which became her home from 1893 until her death in 1926. SIZE: 24″ x 40″. EDMUND WILLIAM GREACEN (American, 1877-1949) WINTER STREAM. Oil on canvas Housed in a period gilt carved wood frame Signed lower left “Edmund Greacen 1922″? Edmund Greacen had the opportunity to study and collaborate with many of the most important American artists at the turn of the century. This roster would include J.H.Twachtman, Childe Hassam, William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri and Irving Wiles among others. It was however in France (1907-1909), near Monet’s home in Giverny, where his lessons would coalesce and his distinctive Impressionist style would be set. Greacen returned to New York in 1910, and perhaps because of fond memories of the Giverny colony, spent summers in Old Lyme, living at the Florence Griswold House. While Greacen exhibited widely, including at the Paris Salon, the National Academy of Design, and the Corcoran Gallery among others, one of his major accomplishments was the founding of an artist’s cooperative in New York. In 1922 along with John Singer Sargent this endeavor became the iconic Grand Central Art Galleries. SIZE: 26″ x 36”.
