In comparing the various sculptures of Zorach’s daughter, Dahlov, done in roughly a several year period, this particular work seems to resonate with more personal feeling & character than the others. ERNEST FIENE (American, 1894-1965) “VARIATIONS ON A THEME, “THE WRECK” NO IV.”. Oil on canvas Housed in a wide weathered wood frame with gilt and white painted liner Signed lower right “E. Fiene 48”, Museum of Art of Ogunquit label on reverse, titled, signed, and dated 1948 on verso. Reference: Illustrated on p. 123 of “Complete Guide to Oil Painting” by Ernest Fiene. Note: The artist, in chapter 8 of his book, explains that on a trip to Maine he sketched the wreck of a little fishing boat. “I painted a series of experimental casein sketches, transforming the wreck structure and debris into larger designs, under different conditions and from different angles. From many casein studies, I selected the most significant ones and developed them into a series of paintings.”. This sketch resulted in the finished painting “The Wreck at Turbot’s Creek” and upon completion of the painting realized that the painting could have several different variations using the same theme. This painting is variation #4 and the artist explains that “No longer the victim of a raging storm, the wreck now reveals a rhythmical, undulating movement, as opposed to the abrupt, linear effects of the last version. Notice how the remnants of the old ship are silhouetted against the white breakers of the ocean, an effect that reinforces the sweeping design”. Also noted is that Variation 2 was owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts, NY and Variation 3 was owned by Nelson Rockefeller, in the Rockefeller Collection. A copy of the book accompanies the lot. Ernest Fiene was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1912. Well trained, he studied at the National Academy of Design, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, the Art Students League and the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere in Paris. The seriousness of his purpose is well illustrated in the iconic Modernist painting. SIZE: 28-1/2″ x 47-1/2″. Overall: 39-1/2″ x 58-1/2″. CONDITION: Very good. 9-29781 (10,000-20,000)
