CHINESE EXPORT LACQUER SEWING BOX ON STAND.

1st half 19th century. Featuring an octagonal lift lid lacquer sewing chest with 2 handles, having a scrolling Ogee top and interior fitted with compartments. Sitting atop its original conforming base, having a pull out sewing bag, supported by a turned pedestal, a shaped platform all a top 3 carved hairy paw feet. Entire surface in lacquer with gilt decoration. SIZE: Overall 18-1/2″ x 13″ x 33″ h. Ming Dynasty period, China. The bronze cast Guanyin is cast seated in dhyanasana on a detachable lotus base with hands in abhaya mudra. Shown wearing long and loose robe, her chest is bejewelled with elaborate beaded necklace. Her face is shown with a benevolent expression, flanked by pendulous earlobes with earrings and wearing a high tiara enclosing a small figure of Buddha. China. The carving is shown with two Fei’tian, or Apsara, raising a sacred pagoda with a shape of a triangular mountain on the top. The Fei’tian’s body is covered with celestial ribbons flying upwards, each face is detailed with downcast eyes, elongated eyes, pendulous earlobes, and hair parted in middle. China. The Bodhisattva is shown standing upon a lotus plinth with each hand holding a sacred object, wearing a long shawl draped over the shoulder and a gracefully draped dhoti falls to the feet. The face is depicted with a downcast eyes and serene expression, and surmounted by a ribbon-tied crown and backed by a halo. With traces of yellow, red, and green pigments remained.
