Rare Lamps, Glass & Fine Jewelry Division
Julia’s Rare Lamps, Glass & Fine Jewelry Division specializes in rare lamps and glass items. It also handles fine silver and antique and estate jewelry. In terms of lamps, the division focuses primarily on early twentieth century lighting by important makers such as Tiffany, Handel, Pairpoint, Duffner and Kimberly, as well as numerous lesser known makers of high quality fixtures. For glass, the division has expertise in areas ranging from early Roman glass from 200 AD to fine contemporary art glass and everything including rare paperweights, exquisite French and English Cameo glass by Daum, Gallé, Webb and others. Also all forms of Fine Art Glass from Tiffany, Quezal, Steuben and more; Fine Porcelain and rare Wedgwood, important glass windows, fine rare cut glass; as we said an entire spectrum of quality of glass, lamp, silver and jewelry. Julia’s Lamp and Glass Division is the largest division of its type in North America. The Division’s recent addition of a top tiered jewelry associate will continue to drive this Division’s success in all rare forms of jewelry and important silver.
When considered based on quality, rarity, prolific number of lots, and total dollar value, the James D. Julia Rare Lamp and Glass Division is one of the Top 3 of its type in the world today and has an international reputation of finding the most interesting rare and exciting items to auction.
The team is lead by Mike Fredericks. Mike is a long time Julia’s employee, formerly our Operations Division Manager from December 2005 to June, 2013. While in the Operations Manager role, Mike had a “hands on” approach with every item that Julia’s handles. This allowed him not only to gain explicit knowledge about how to safely handle rare Lamps and Glass, but he learned the nuances of the division as well as meeting many of the leading dealers and collectors around the world. “My passion for history and appreciation for fine craftsmanship is what brought me to Julia’s in 2005 as the Operations Manager. The opportunity to have a dynamic role with this well-respected firm during an incredible period of growth was one I could not pass up. I am optimistic that my new role in the Rare Glass and Lamp Division will be equally as rewarding.” Mike Fredericks
Former Division Manager Dudley Browne, who has been with Julia’s since 2001 will continue to consult with Julia’s and as well as assisting in the cataloging of our consignments. Dudley travels extensively in North America and abroad, working with consignors of rare glass and lamps. Dudley is a lifelong lamp and glass enthusiast who is known for his subject expertise, sales skills, and eternal quest for the next great find. According to Browne, “My parents were antique dealers in Wyoming and I grew up in the antique business. In 1976 I took over the family’s antique business. There was not a lot of fine glass or lighting in Wyoming at that time but one day I was able to purchase a Blue Favrile Tiffany bowl from an estate. Instead of putting the bowl in the shop I took it home and put it in my own collection. My love of glass and lamps had begun.”
The department is supported by administrative assistant Julie Killam who has been with James D. Julia for over a decade. The department also has a full stable of national consultant specialty professionals who are called upon on an as needed basis, adding to the division’s great bench strength of knowledge and expertise.
