UNUSUAL “JOHN DORY” FISH TRADE SIGN.

1st half 20th century, Australia or England. This double sided three dimensional carved pine sign depicting a “John Dory” also known as “St. Peter”, “St. Pierre”, or “Peter’s fish”. The dorsal fin fitted with ten curved iron “spines” which are also present on the anal fins, the sign also rendered which a cylindrical walnut “eye” at upper mid body, characteristic to this species. The sign with tack eyes and slightly open mouth with tack teeth. The original painted surfaces have been mostly removed, the body re-polished. *NOTE* The fish has a large dark spot, and long spines on the dorsal fin. John Dory are coastal fish, found on the coasts of Africa, South East Asia, New Zealand, Australia, the coasts of Japan, and on the coasts of Europe. SIZE: 40″ h x 42″ l. CONDITION: Surfaces as noted, sign retains original linked hanging chains, a pleasing old sheet copper repair to proper left pectoral fin and to tail at juncture of body, an additional sheet copper repair along seam split along proper right side of body and to anal fin.
