FINE EBONIZED MARQUETRY SECRETAIRE A ABATTANT AND MATCHING TALL CHEST.

Probably New York, last quarter 19th century. 1) The ebonized oak escritoire with abalone chip inlays all within borders of inset brass strips. The lid decorated with intricate marquetry of overall meandering tendrils and vinery centering a large floral bouquet composed of abalone and hardstone inlays. Each drawer front decorated with similar brass inlaid and painted vinery with abalone flower heads. The rectangular top with molded edge above the conforming case fitted with frieze drawer over a hinged vertical lid with molded inset panel as described above. The interior with recessed mirror over two aligned stationary drawers, the writing surface fitted with olive green velvet. The whole above four long drawers flanked by freestanding Corinthian columns with cast gilt metal capitols, the bases applied with ribbon-tied garlands and cast Anthemion leaves, on molded base raised on suppressed ball feet. 2) The ebonized oak six drawer chest with abalone chip inlays all within borders of inset brass strips. Each drawer with intricate marquetry depicting brass tendrils and vinery with abalone flower heads. The rectangular top with molded edge above the conforming case fitted with six long drawers flanked by freestanding Corinthian columns with cast gilt metal capitols, the bases applied with ribbon-tied garlands and cast Anthemion leaves. The whole on molded base raised on suppressed ball feet. SIZE: 1) 52″ h x 33-1/2″ w x 20″ d. 2) 52″ h x 33″ w x 19-1/2″ d. CONDITION: 1) Ebonized lacquer surfaces with minor cracking in top, case with normal wear throughout. Small losses to wood frame of right hinge on lid that does not affect mechanics. Structurally sound, good overall. 2) Cracks in top, small areas of staining to ebonized surface, similar to alcohol spills. One brass Strip absent on fourth drawer from top. Two brass strips off of proper left side but present. Two brass strips near base proper right side in need of re-attachment, otherwise structurally sound. 51881-1, 51881-2, (6,000-7,000) – Lot 3089
