THOMAS CHAMBERS (American, 1808-1866) VIEW FROM WEST POINT.

Oil on canvas Housed in a fine gilt molded wood frame Unsigned Written on back stretcher in pencil: “This painting belonged to Caleb Dustin Hunking/An early Hunking. She and __ /Thought to represent the Hudson River/It was given by his daughter Mrs. Hunking and Mrs. _ Clifton —– Then given to me in 1976.” Research indicates there was a Caleb Dustin Hunking (1805-1872) and was a New Hampshire resident. REFERENCE: For similar view by Chambers see fig. 36 in “The Hudson River and it’s Painters” by John K. Howat for a 1/2 page color illustration SIZE: 18″ x 24″. Overall: 23-1/2″ x 29-1/2″ CONDITION: One old patch on verso with corresponding inpainting, craquelure, scattered spot inpainting. Otherwise very good with strong colors and having its original canvas 52335-1 (8,000-12,000) – Lot 1220
